Off-duty corrections officer injured in attempt to stop shoplifter |
RE: Off-duty corrections officer injured in attempt to stop shoplifter...
Not my coworkers, I don't work for LMPD. And I agree, for all the training they get, LMPD officers don't seem to be "getting" certain things either. I loved hearing a detective, on the radio, the other day talk about "Theft over 300" - didn't they get the memo that it is now 500?
But if it isn't relevant, why does LMPD spend so much time training their recuits? Should they drop back to the required 18 weeks? The reality is, and you can't dispute it, nothing in Corrections training prepares them to chase down shoplifters on the street. They don't learn about all these statutes and tactics I know what is in their curriculum, it isn't there. This isn't faulting them, police officers don't learn how to manage prisoners. It isn't their job to do so. You get trained to do the functions of your job, and this isn't a function of their job.
Can you honestly deny that Corrections officers do NOT get any training in these matters? If they do, I'd ask why we are paying to train people to do things that isn't part of their job. That's like training a paramedic to do a sonogram tech's job.
