An off-duty Louisville Metro Corrections officer was injured when he was dragged by a car while trying to stop a shoplifter early Tuesday morning.

The officer saw a suspected shoplifter shortly after midnight at the Thorntons convenience store at the corner of West Broadway and South First Street, said Pam Windsor, a corrections spokeswoman.

After confronting the suspect out in the parking lot, the officer was dragged by the suspect's car for about half a block, Windsor said.

The suspect reportedly fled down the nearby ramp to southbound Interstate 65, said Louisville Metro Police spokeswoman Alicia Smiley.

The officer was taken to University Hospital with bruises and abrasions, and he was released later Tuesday morning, Windsor said.

The suspect was reportedly driving a gray car, Smiley said.

No arrests have been made.
