Off-duty corrections officer injured in attempt to stop shoplifter...

Whether you realize it or not, you're always on-duty, just not always on-the-clock (including the staff at the county lockup). But also very important, don't forget that you're always mortal, no matter where you work or whether you're on the clock or not. You always need to keep your training and conditioning current, because you never know when an event like this will unfold.

Best wishes to the corrections officer. I commend your actions and hope you have a speedy recovery. For all others, just remember: this could have been much worse. Be safe.

This is why I no longer work off duty jobs. I won't sacrifice my safety anymore for this lousy department, let alone for a gas station that's getting a case of beer stolen from it.

These people want to live like animals- it's their culture, so let 'em have it!

May the officer have a speedy recovery...

We on the various PD's make assumptions about the experiences and trainings of our corrections brethren... The sad reality is that they can teach us much about being safe with some our thugs and we can teach them about safely responding to situations. Every current LMPD officer who I know that was a JCCD (or LMCD) officer have a much stronger street presence and awareness than most of our newly hired brethren... However many of our LMCD brethren assume that they are street smart because they have dealt with many of these caged criminals - it isn't the same... Dangerous yes, but the same it is not (Yoda speak) - it comes down to comparing apples and oranges.

Back to my arguments that maybe all new LMPD officers should start in the corrections environment and transistion to the street after a year or two... It would give a good chance to weed out many of the unsuitable recruits. However this would mean a LONGER time to get valuable officers to the streets and to replace the horrible retention rates at LMCD.

Any, after all, I am just saying...

Don't ever stick your hands into a car. Even if you know the keys are out of the ignition, they could still have a knife or a gun.

at least the guy had the intestinal fortitude to do something about the robbery/shoplifting/whatever it was. Hope he gets to feeling better soon. I always appreciate it when I get a back up from Corrections out on the street - especially when I'm by myself and have a clown car packed with 5 thugs.
