I'm sorry but you just do not get it.
RE: Investigation finds Gross Mismanagement in city government
The "driving accidents" you are referring to are mostly officers who are either responding to an emergency call and crashed their car (either due to weather or due to another driver who did not know what to do when they saw lights and heard the siren coming to wards them), or were on the side of the road with a violator, or trying to help a stranded motorist or on a traffic stop.
You're right when you say that most officers are killed by cars-they get killed doing their job, which makes our job dangerous. I myself have nearly been run over more than once while on the side of the road during a traffic stop. We risk our lives every time we stop a car. It doesn't matter if we stop a wanted fugitive or a grandma going to church, when we're on the side of the road doing anything we are in harms way. Inattentive drivers are our worst enemies and the biggest hazards to us while we are doing our jobs-it doesn't always have to be a man with a gun...that car is a 2000 lb. bullet that our vest won't stop. That doesn't make our jobs less dangerous. I can shoot back at a man with a gun, I can't make a car stop running me over at 60 mph by shooting it. Civilians just don't seem to understand the concept of danger. People only think of guns as dangerous to us...they don't understand why it's not OK for them to get out of their car when we pull them over, or reach around inside of their vehicle while we're walking up to their car, or why we don't want them putting their hands in their pockets while we talk to them... or why we want them to slow down and move over when we're on the side of the road with our emergency lights on. They will tell us "I'm not a criminal" or "I don't have any weapons" always in a sarcastic tone-we don't know that...Yes, our jobs are dangerous-it doesn't have to be a man with a gun, the danger can come from us driving to an injury accident or to an alarm call.
We don't get paid for what we do....We get paid for what we might have to do, and unless you've done our job, you have no idea what we do.
