A few of these mandatories are in your P&P, I've seen the P&P on them. Others should be, and aren't. Do you want to be on the stand explaining why state law requires you do to something and you didn't do it? (Ask those teachers in Bullitt County a few years back who were charged because they followed their school policy on child abuse notification rather than state law - they were convicted ....) Remember the old maxim - ignorance of the law is no excuse.

Do you know how to read an implied consent warning to a suspect? Don't say - that's Corrections' job - since you might have to do it at a hospital for a blood draw, for example. (And if you retire and go outside Jefferson County, you'll have to do it all.)

You don't have to have an arrest to notify the victim as to their rights. Victims SHOULD be notified when an arrest is made - I know too many who find out there was an arrest when they get a sub for court - or when the suspect gets out of jail and contacts them. Why not have a unit that makes those contacts? Doesn't have to be sworn, after all. Why not a handout? At least you'd have a defense if someone does complain?

And no, I don't know everything, but I do know what I know. I don't want to see some street LMPD officer on the hot seat because they assume that they know everything they need to know.
