Officer killed in Virginia police station shooting

One police officer was killed and another seriously wounded in a shooting Monday at a police station in Fairfax County, Virginia, the police chief said.

The male suspect was shot and killed in the incident, which took place at about 3:30 p.m. in the parking lot of the Sully District Station, in the western part of the county, county police Chief David Rohrer told reporters Monday night

The slain officer was a female detective who had been on the job nine years, said Rohrer, who declined to identify her pending notification of more family members.

"She was an exemplary detective for us. We love her greatly," Rohrer said.

Rohrer said police were "pretty confident" there was only one gunman involved. Initial reports that described two gunmen had prompted police to search the area for a possible second suspect.

Police spokeswoman Mary Ann Jennings said the gunman had not yet been identified. He was not carrying identification and was driving a stolen car, she said.

The gunman was carrying a rifle and two handguns, Jennings said.

Aerial footage after the incident showed emergency vehicles and yellow police tape in the station parking lot, and police cars blocking traffic on nearby streets dampened by rain.
