While I respect your opinion, I disagree. The take home cars provide a presence in the community, whether they're being driven to an officers home or parked at the county line. You're only looking at one side of the issue, where they're parked. What about getting to and from from that spot at the county line. How many stranded motorists, accidents, and other police issues do you think have been handled by an Officer heading to or from his parking spot at the county line? I can tell you that I personally have assisted the community numerous times on these issues....while I was off duty in my marked LMPD Vehicle. However, if I had been in my personal car I would not have been able to assist. Don't forget that Officers that live out of county still sometimes drive their police cars when they're not working. That is a police presence. When I'm heading to work I first pick up my car to drive to my division. Police presence. When I get off work I drive my car back to the county line. Police presence. The idea of the take home car program is to have more LMPD cars on the streets and this is accomplished whether the Officer lives in the county or not. What good to community would that marked car be if it was sitting at the division during my off days?
