If he was threatening the life of an officer, and THAT officer was in fear enough to shoot him, why is this knuckledhead Tasing him?! -I know the answer to that- because between the Training weenies and the constant brain-washing of newer officers, the newer cops are SCARED to do what they NEED to do!

Let me make a couple of observations: 1. Since merger we have produced officers that are hesistant to use force, sure the tools on thier belts is force....Im talking about hands on (fist ta cuffs) using thier firearm or whatever means necessary to go home at night because the training they are receiving puts sooooo much fear of being sued, fired or indicted that they feel they have to follow certain steps before they can act...lack of support for upper command puts the policing on a reactive instead of proactive status. 2. Why is it the front page of the CJ today focused on a single officer....its funny how the news media ( tv, paper) like to badmouth the police and make them look like crooks to everyone who recieves the CJ ( not just louisville residents, but any subscribers) and yet I remember not to long ago officers going into the CJ ( 1980's formally SG) to try and stop a deranged man from hurting people. But that is easily forgotten, now it seems that the police are a punching bag and are content on taking it.

Question: What needs to be done to stop the abuse of the police?? Lawsuit, aggressive law enforcement or laying down and becoming a reactive department and letting the city's crime get even worse? Something MUST be done to build the support from this community that says enough is enough when it comes to bashing the police!!!

I am sick and tired of seeing officers on here beating the hell out of one another after every critical incident. What ever happened to looking out for one another? The officers involved did everything they could to end the situation without deadly force, not because they were scared, but because they care about the value of human life. If you were not there shut up and just be there for your brothers. They are going through a hard enough time without having to hear from every Monday morning quarterback who thinks they are super cop and could have done better. To the officers involved, you have my support! You went home, that's all that matters!

Sunday the coroner's office confirmed that man was 48-year-old Donnie Miles, a man people who live at Iroquois Park say had a history of mental illness and a man they believe police should never have shot.

"The cops didn't need to do that. He just had a hammer. Why couldn't they just shoot him in the leg?" said Nancy French who was friends with Donnie.

Unless the department wants to make a major investment of time and money to mandate continuous martial arts training for officers, you can't seriously expect LMPD officers to do much more than talk, spray, taze and shoot. If they did require martial arts training from the academy until retirement, LMPD would be one of the few in North America. All forms of combat require frequent practice for you to remain proficient, especially unarmed combat. The typical police officer would be unnecessarily risking their life if they tried to manually disarm a guy like that.

Today, I got shot after going after the po po with a hammer. FML

I don't know why they didn't shoot the hammer out of his hands like in the movies. Maybe if they brought doughnuts we would have dropped it. I bet those mean cops called him a name and thats why he was so out of control. - you've got to be kidding me ! Maybe one of those yaps talking to the tv channels claiming to be the guys friend should have tried to get him some help !

It sucks they had to shoot him. They did what they had to, not what they wanted to. End of story. They didn't go looking for him, they were called there.

Too many questions. Could they have aimed for the legs? hammer's a pretty short range object. What was the worst he could do to four heavily armed officers? If he was close enough to do damage with a hammer, were'nt they close enough to pepper spray they daylights out of him and use those bone crushing extendable clubs they carry? How big was this hammer? How much of a threat did this guy really pose, based on the call? Should these police be charged for murder? If two people in this neighborhood killed each other over a dispute, there would surely be a trial, and someone doing some well earned prison time. Well its not like the police ever get to experience due process like this firsthand, and in this case I think some boys in blue deserve some manslaughter charges, so they can't just move along thinking they did the right thing when they could have thought of some less violent trigger happy alternatives. I think someones pride got injured when he slipped on the ice. someone says " at least the good guys went home". So they're good because they got away with murder and went home to their families. The family they deprived is hurting way worse. Oh well, at least they can have the knowledge that these officers that destroyed there relative are still getting paid not to show up to work. wHat a well earned vacation.

First - The officers were dispatched to this run - which involved a male attempting to force entry into a females home

Second - 1st Officer slipped on ice and suspect tried to hit him with hammer while he was down.

Third - subject was tased TWICE, only to swipe the probes out his chest. Subject then fled inmto his house and SWAT was notified...

Fourth - Pepperball was deployed

Fifth - Officer continued to back up, until subject charged them and they were force to use lethal force.

In the end, the officers REACTED to decisions made by this subject/suspect/criminal and they made what appear to be solid decisions at the scene. I will not fault their actions, they were there, I was not... Neither were the vast majority of the posters here.

God Bless the officers and their families... May the suspect find whatever peace God will grant him, however I hope St. Michael greets him BEFORE St. Peter and escorts to the stairs marked DOWN.

Okay, so I have read the articles and I find myself saying something I NEVER THOUGH POSSIBLE... I think the Chief just said the right thing... He is squarely on the side of the officers and basically told the morons to politely go screw themselves... I still don't agree with him on just about everything, but he jsut earned a bit of respect.

1. The officers DID a good job, after all they get to see their families again. And that is enough reason.

Did J. Hollingsworth really get fired????????????????

How come there hasn't been any thread started about Detective Marlowe? Several articles have been in the CJ, but not a peep has been written on this site. Hollingsworth was a major topic here eventhough nothing was written on her in the CJ, so most of the public had no idea of her behavior.

I guess it's time to put in my 2 cents worth. I know what I'm about to say will ruffle a lot of feathers in this dept but here goes, I've done it before. I hate the CJ more than most and mostly they print crap, but this DET. that we have seems to have made a few mistakes, judges,CJ, court system and victims are saying something is wrong and now they filed a lawsuit. It reasons where there is smoke there is usually fire. This is for the dept and now courts to investigate and if violations were made then swift discipline is warranted and swiftly. We get on this site and air our problems for the world to see. How many of us have got up from the roll call table bitching about and issue then leave to our own world in our car or office without trying to do anything. If you say I don't then sorry I don't believe you. When was the last time you bypassed your Sgts who don't want to make waves with the LTs who don't want to here anything and stopped your Major in the hallway for that chat about what's going on,(no he can't eat you.) I was always told that 3 things will get you fired and possibly idicted-money,guns and drugs,I'm going to add 2 more women and lying.

We have 2 officers that have been in the media a lot for the past 6 months, we get on here and complain nothing is being done and your probably right. This administration should be spending more time listenening and investigating the facts than worrying about stats. A dept with a few bad apples will rotten the whole barrel with time. I sure there are officers that know what's going on but don't want to get involved and that's up to you. You have to live with it not me. As for this recent shooting- a crazed man with a hammer looking to take vengence and kill anyone is his path came upon the wrong person, police officers who are there TO PROTECT AND TO SERVE who did their jobs. I really don't care how anybody else sees it. We have become a dept of when am I going to get a new car, how much court pay or OT can I make for my retirement or how many part-time jobs can I get because I'm one foot in bankrupcy because the city doesn't want to pay me anything that we have forgot why we took the job-TO PROTECT AND TO SERVE. If you can't do this then GET OUT nobodys keeping you here. I don't agree with this administration on much they do but the Chief did FINALLY get behind officers with this one, I say it's sbout time he showed some guts to the media and public. If he would do a little more and take action on some of the previous issues mentioned he might see a difference in his troops, but he won't because I really think he doesn't care anymore. For the most part we do our jobs and do it well and go home safely at the end of the shift which is the goal of us all, and if we did a little more policing within our dept by ourselves most of the other biased opinions and crap would go away. I've seen a big change in the way we conduct business during my tenure which has been a long time and some of it's not for the best as of late, let's try to clean up our own HOUSE get the public on our side and the media off our AS# and get back on track with or without this administration's help. Sometimes I think we are our own worst enemies.

This department has become a complete joke. I cannot believe we have people defending the alleged criminal activity of an officer. If she is guilty she will be gone and perhaps in jail. If not she will be cleared. I have the CJ but there are so many more cases that need to be examined by the CJ of the DOJ. We have people who lie on other officers, lie in court, and do many other things and are allowed to continue to draw a check. When an investigation is complete (in a timely manner) issue the punishment. Stop dragging things out, DO NOT let completed cases sit on the chief's desk in order to prevent them from becoming public record.
