Placing The Blame

RE: Placing The Blame

Show me where that is wrong? Every officer I know is going to leave, and would NOT leave, no matter how much they hate the Chief, if they couldn't get full retirement and go get another job. (They can't afford to do so.) It won't really hit home until officers with ten years on start bailing to other agencies. Remember, ain't nothing keeping an LMPD officer from finding another policing job in the area, officers out in the state move around all the time. (But remember, no job protection in most sheriff's offices at all.)

Right now, you have 15 years on, you HATE the chief. Will you leave? Go to another policing job - particularly one where the ability to work off-duty isn't there? Take a job at the SO that doesn't provide a take-home car? That's my point. The department figures that there is nothing they can do to keep officers eligible for haz-duty retirement - and is there REALLY something they can do? If LMPD, today, raised salaries enough for those eligible to retire (including those who are carrying military time and can go with less than 20 with a police agency) to make it about equal to what you could make otherwise, would you stay? (You don't get the raise until you are eligible to retire.)

When officers start LEAVING, and NOT retiring, then that will get their attention. Until then, all the departures in the world are not going to make a difference.
