Glendale police officer shot and killed during traffic stop

Those words are so true. In January of 2000 I was appointed chief of police of our small city of about 2600 & just a month later in February we lost our first officer in the line of duty when he was shot on a "routine" traffic stop for a suspended driver. Unbknownst to the officer, the perp had drugs on him & after being told he was going to jail on the DWS, he pulled .25 from his back pocket & shot our officer in the head. He died the following day never regaining consciousness. It was a day I'll never forget for the rest of my life. It was life & career changing. I stayed on the force for another year, but I had a continual empty feeling & could not bring myself to even drive past the spot where it happened. I visited the cemetery every day either before or after my shift. My heart & soul had been taken from me & I didn't want to do the job anymore. I have moved on, but it is still very painful.
