Glendale police officer shot and killed during traffic stop

A Glendale Arizona police officer was fatally shot early Monday during a routine traffic stop near 59th Avenue and Camelback Road.

Officer Anthony John Holly, 24, a two-year veteran, was the first Glendale police officer killed in the line of duty, Glendale Police Chief Steve Conrad said.

"This is an incredible loss," Conrad said in a news conference outside St. Joseph's Hospital in Phoenix. "It's extremely traumatic for all of us."

Conrad said Holly was helping other officers stop a car. A few of the people inside were wanted on warrants.

Conrad said officers arrested the first suspect without any problems. When they approached the second suspect, the person stepped out of the car, pulled a gun from his waist and started firing.

Officers fired back. Holly and the suspect were both hit.

Conrad said three suspects were taken into custody while Holly was rushed to the hospital. He was later pronounced dead in the emergency room.

Chief Conrad was the former Assistant Police Chief here in Louisville before taking over the Glendale Police Department. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of Officer Holly, Chief Conrad and all our brothers and sisters in Glendale.
