CJ only has what they can get through open records and what other officers tell them. That said, remember, they could have simply not run it at all - they broke the story, after all - which sort of inddicates to me that the news division does seeem to be acting somewhat independently from the editorial board and powers that be, which impressed the h*ll out of me. I don't mind the news media doing their job, as long as they are actually the NEWS media and bring news.
