A friend of mine is three YEARS into the process, she married a U.S. citizen and moved here in 2006. It isn't a simple matter, it takes time and it is not automatic. I assume you have to be a U.S. citizen to be a Louisville police officer?

My wife is from Canada and has lived here since 2002. We got married in Louisville and she is still not a U.S. citizen. She is a permanent resident and carries a "green" card. You do not become a U.S. citizen automatically when you marry a citizen. You have to go through immigration and a lot of paperwork to become a permanent resident, then depending on what country you come from, you have to wait a specified time (usually 3-5 years) to take the citizenship test.
If you have a child in this country, whether you're here legally or illegally, that child automatically is a U.S. citizen, even if the parents are not.
