That same old live within your means line is absolute crap. Come up with something else. My dad has been a firefighter my entire life and has always had two jobs because the job he LOVES (firefighter) just doesn't pay enough for him to live with his wife and children. We never lived in a fancy house or bought fancy things. I was raised in a humble neighborhood and was never spoiled. My dad worked the 2nd job so he could do what he LOVED and still live a real life with his family.

What would you have police and fire and ems do? Or teachers for that matter (I know plenty who have to work second jobs)? Never marry? Never have children? Never buy homes? Sacrifice what they are passionate about just to pay the bills without any benefits so YOU can approve of their life choices? How can you ask people to do things that no human wants to do?

You act as if these officers and other emergency services professionals are living in fancy houses and blowing through money and not being adults who budget and function as responsible adults. You act as if they are rockstars living some high profile life and they need to rein it in and quit their b*tchin because they're livin the good life anyway. You've shown how truly uninformed you really are. How sad it is for all of them that people like you are out there thinking you really know any level of factual information.
