At least three people are dead and as many as three more injured in an outbreak of shootings Thursday afternoon near West Broadway.

At 1 p.m., police received a report of multiple shootings in the 1000 block of 32nd Street. When they arrived at the scene, they found two men dead of gunshot wounds, police spokesman Dwight Mitchell said. A third man was taken to University Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

While a crowd gathered, more shots were fired and one more person killed in what may have been an officer-involved shooting, according to a reporter on the scene.

The man who received life-threatening injuries in the initial shooting drove to 26th and Elliott streets before he was taken to University, Mitchell said.

"This was pretty brazen," Mitchell said.

Police have no motive or suspects and are asking people to call 574-LMPD if they have information.

Jefferson County Public Schools officials say Engelhard, Byck, Brandeis, Maupin and Carter schools are not on lock down but are on a high security level as a precaution. Students living at 24th, 25th, 26th and 32nd and Elliott streets neighborhood where JCPS has a bus stop are being taken to Central High School.

Any affected students will call their parents from Central, who can pick them up, according to district spokeswoman Lauren Roberts. Otherwise, the district will deliver them home when the area is cleared.
