A Jefferson County Sheriff's Deputy shot and killed a man early today in south Louisville.

Lieutenant Colonel Carl Yates tells WDRB the deputy had gone to a home on Powell Avenue to serve an Emergency Protective Order. But there was no answer at the home.

The deputy became suspicious of a man who was walking down the street. After talking to him, they did a check of the license plate on his car. A felony warrant was discovered, but the man tried to take off.

The deputy struggled with the man through the car window, as he tried to drive away. The officer was dragged a block before shooting the man on Glendale Avenue.

The deputy was injured. It is unclear whether he was stabbed, as initially reported. He was taken to University Hospital but is expected to be okay.
