PHOTO

He may be a rookie cop, but he's no longer green behind the ears. Philadelphia police officer, Robert Krol, is recovering from being shot Wednesday night during a gunfight. Meanwhile, lawmen are searching for a second suspect. It all began last night with an armed robbery at a grocery store. There was a foot chase, a firefight and when it was over a robber was dead. The storeowner and police officer were wounded. Earlier today rookie officer Robert Krol met with reporters. Thirty-five-year-old police officer Robert Krol stood on the porch of his Frankford home this afternoon after his release from Temple Hospital where he was treated for a bullet wound to his left arm. The bullet entered his elbow and exited from his shoulder missing bones and arteries. Officer Krol's brush with death came at about 8:45 last night in the Nicetown section when he and his partner responded to an armed robbery at the Los Barrocas grocery store. As police arrived they say two gunmen were fleeing and a foot chase followed. The storeowner, 29-year-old Ambrosio Suero, also gave chase with his weapon according to witnesses. Finally a hail of bullets rang out and one of the robbers was killed. Police say the grocer's wallet and jewelry were found on the dead man. Suero, the grocer, was treated and released for a foot wound. Officer Krol, less than two months out of the police academy, spent the night at Temple Hospital for the gunshot wound.Officer Krol's previous job was a maintenance technician for a chemical plant.
