Louisville Metro Police Department is investigating an officer-involved shooting which happened shortly after 9 p.m. Dec. 16 in the parking lot of a retail chain's supercenter.

According to Alicia Smiley, a LMPD spokesperson, officers with the 8th Division had information about a possible drug deal. Smiley says just after 9:10 p.m., officers tried to stop a car they believed was involved in the drug deal on the parking lot of the Middletown WalMart at 12981 Shelbyville Road near the Gene Snyder Freeway. When the car took off and tried to leave, Smiley said an officer fired their service weapon.

Police were able to stop the car about 100 yards away while it was still in the WalMart parking lot. No one was injured.

As of 11 p.m., LMPD had one person detained, but no charges had been filed nor arrest made. Smiley said officers recovered narcotics.

Smiley said the officers involved in the incident were placed on paid administrative leave, but did not have information on how many. The shooting will be investigated by the LMPD Public Integrity Unit.
