A man was found dead in a car around 2:30 this morning after a Louisville police officer chased two suspects near the Auburndale Shopping Center.

An officer on routine patrol saw the two suspects, one with a gun in his hand, running from a Speedway gas station toward the shopping center, said Alicia Smiley, a Louisville Metro Police Department spokeswoman.

One of the suspects fired at the officer but missed, she said. The officer did not fire.

Trey Skaggs, 18, was arrested and charged with murder, attempted murder of a police officer and fleeing and evading, Smiley said.

A second person has been detained and is being questioned, she said.

Police found a man who had been shot sitting in a car in the parking lot at the Speedway gas station on the 7400 block of Third Street Road, she said.

The names of the victim, the officer and the person being detained have not been released.

An earlier story said the gun discharged when one of the men fell and dropped his weapon, but Smiley said that was wrong. She said the suspect did fall but the gun did not discharge as the weapon dropped. She said the suspect fired his weapon. She also said there was only one officer involved in the initial chase, not two, as the earlier story said.
