Minnesota Police Kill Armed Fugitive

Police shot and killed a man who had walked away from a federal halfway house and kidnapped a local woman. Police Chief John Wagner said officers fired when Leslie Fredrickson, 52, threatened them with a gun after they cornered him in a parking lot following a car chase.Fredrickson had been released from prison in Oxford, Wis., about three weeks ago, after serving more than four years on a firearms conviction. He was supposed to stay at the halfway house in Fargo, N.D., for 60 days but apparently took off Thursday night. Police said Fredrickson kidnapped a local hotel owner at gunpoint Friday morning, forced her to drive him around in her car for about an hour, then shoved her out of the vehicle unharmed. She alerted police, who already were on the lookout for Fredrickson and had warned his relatives and other people who they feared he might go after. Fredrickson next stole a car from a sister-in-law, who put police on his tail, leading to the parking lot confrontation. Fredrickson's criminal history with guns went back 10 years, when he took his 13-year-old son hostage with a rifle. He was released in 1995 and re-arrested days later for stalking former co-workers at the U.S. Postal Service in this western Minnesota town.
