4th division flex detectives were fired upon by a fleeing drug suspect in the Sheppard Square housing development today at approximately 1500 hrs.
The suspect was running from detectives Kevin McKinney and Brian Wright when he pulled a semi-automatic pistol and fired 1 shot at the officers. The detectives did not return fire because there several children playing in the area. The suspect then fled into an unoccupied apartment.
Nearby residents were evacuated and 4th division officers secured the scene until S.W.A.T arrived to take over.
During the standoff, the suspect exited the apartment and confronted a S.W.A.T officer with his handgun. The S.W.A.T officer fired 3 times striking the suspect in the abdomen and hand.
The suspect was transported to University hospital where he remains in critical condition.
