4th Division Flex Officers Injured During Struggle

PHOTO

Two 4th division flex officers were injured during a narcotics arrest early Friday morning.  The incident began when Officersâ?? Lisa Doyle and Kristen Downs observed a vehicle operating recklessly in the Old Louisville Area. The officers initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle near the intersection of 2nd & Gaulbert after a registration check revealed discrepancies with the plate on the vehicle.

The suspect vehicle came to a stop in front of Pearson Court Apartments.   The driver immediately exited the vehicle and started to run.  Officer Downs was able to catch the suspect after a short foot chase and a violent struggle ensued.

The struggle quickly went to the ground where the suspect began trying to disarm Officer Doyle.  To prevent the subject from gaining control of her firearm, Officer Doyle rolled onto her side to protect the weapon.  The suspect rolled with her while attempting to gain control of Officer Doyleâ?'s service weapon. When doing so, the suspect rolled on top of Officer Downsâ?? leg, fracturing it.

During the struggle the officerâ?'s observed the suspect throw what appeared to be a bindle of cocaine to an unknown 3rd party.  Officer Downs instructed the unknown subject to leave it alone. He complied.

Officer Downs deployed her taser on the combative suspect, but the taser appeared to have little affect. Due to the close quarters struggle, Officer Doyle quickly became entangled in the taser wires deployed at the suspect. Each time the taser was reengaged, Officer Doyle endured the majority of the shock.

The struggle ensued for nearly 10 minutes before backup units were able to locate the 2 flex officers and bring the suspect under control.

It should be noted that both officers, although badly injured, continued to struggle with the suspect until backup units arrived. Officer Downsâ?? leg was fractured in 3 places and Officer Doyle suffered a dislocated shoulder. The suspect weighed more than the 2 officerâ?'s combined weight.
