Louisville Metro Police was tight-lipped Thursday afternoon hours after Chief Steve Conrad said a man was shot and killed by an officer in the Southside neighborhood.

Conrad said officers were sent to the Colonial Oaks apartments near Colonial Oaks Court and Southside Drive just after noon on Thursday. Dispatchers received several calls about a domestic violence disturbance that was taking place there.

When officers arrived, they allegedly found a man holding a woman on the ground at knifepoint. Conrad said the man refused to drop the knife, and officers who arrived on the scene fired shots "to protect the woman's life."

The man was shot and transported to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Conrad said the LMPD Public Integrity Unit will investigate the case.

Conrad concluded his brief remarks in less than two minutes.

"I know that typically I have opened myself up for questions at this preliminary briefing," he apologized. "At this point, I don't have much more information than what I've shared with you. We plan to do a more in-depth briefing tomorrow where myself and someone from Public Integrity will be in a position to provide more details, more information and to release what we can at that point."

LMPD has not said if body camera footage of the shooting exists.

A woman who lives nearby and only wanted to be identified by her first name, Jill, said she knew the man shot and killed by police. The woman emerged from her apartment and saw police and her neighbor.

"The man is laying out of the windows, like he fell out of the windows, the curtains and everything busted out," she said.
