A robbery suspect is dead after an officer-involved shooting in the 9100 block of Beulah Church Road, police said Sunday morning.

The suspect was shot dead after a foot chase that started at 7:55 a.m. when police responded to a holdup alarm at a KFC at 6600 Bardstown Road, Louisville Metro Police Chief Steve Conrad said.

When police arrived at the KFC they found that a hole had been shot in the drive-through window of the restaurant, Conrad said.

Police looked inside the restaurant and saw people tied up on the floor, he said.

The SWAT team was called in but the suspect fled on foot with a hostage, who at some point either escaped or was let go, Conrad said.

The foot chase led to the backyard of a home on Beulah Church Road, where the suspect fired at police and police fired back, he said.

The suspect was killed, apparently by the police, he said. Conrad said at one point during the foot chase the suspect had put his gun to his head but didn't fire.

Hazel Mattingly, who lives on Beulah Church Road with her husband, Bob, said she was leaving their house to go grocery shopping when three officers came up their driveway and "one of them hollered, 'Don't come out, shut the door!'"

When they heard the gunshots, they weren't entirely sure that's what they were but they knew they weren't fireworks, Bob Mattingly said.

He said he "never dreamed it was something like that."
