The body of the Chief Deputy of the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office was found in Barren County.

Chief Deputy Col. Mike Hettich was found dead at Barren River State Park Lodge on Monday, Jefferson County Sheriff's Office Lt. Col. Carl Yates confirmed.

Hettich, a 33-year veteran of the department, was in Barren County attending a 40 hour law enforcement command training class.

Following his death, Sen. Mitch McConnell released the following statement:

"Our Commonwealth has lost a giant of public service upon the passing of Chief Deputy Mike Hettich of the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office. Mike has been a personal friend for decades, and a tireless advocate on behalf of his brother and sister officers in Kentucky law enforcement and across our nation. Elaine and I offer our prayers and condolences to his wife and fellow police officer, Tandeta, his daughter Heather, and son Dakota."

No foul play is suspected in his death, but an investigation is being conducted by the Barron County Sherriff's Office.

Funeral arrangements for Hettich are pending.
