The men and women who serve and protect the citizens of Louisville were honored on Saturday.

The Louisville Metro Police Department held its awards celebration at the Galt House Hotel, honoring more than 100 police officers and civilian employees for their bravery, compassion and commitment to the community.

Several citizens also were honored. Ten-year-old Donald Gritton III was among them. While playing with his classmates at Kenwood Elementary School, Donald saw a person hiding in the bushes with a gun. Donald quickly and calmly told his teacher, who called police.

"It made me feel good, like, it made me feel I did the right thing," said Donald.

"Eleven years from now, he'll be 21 -- old enough to apply to the department," said LMPD Chief Steve Conrad. "I hope he considers to apply to the LMPD."

This was the eleventh year for the awards celebration.
