Officer Mattingly Terminated from Police Department

April 15th, 2004 @ 11:32PM (20 years ago)

I have been a policeman for over 12 years in Greensboro, NC. I worked for Robert White. I along with most other patrolman was glad to see him go. When representatives from your department came to Greensboro and asked about relations between then Chief White and the department they were warned by many officers that they felt he did not care about the police officers that worked for him. Sadly your department is finding this out now. I wish you all luck.

Despite what has happened in recent months with the LMPD, and Officer Mattingly in particular, I must say this:I live in downtown Louisville, and every time I hear a strange noise outside of my apartment, or I am awakened by some disturbance, when I look out, there is almost always a police cruiser waiting at the stoplight at the street below. I take comfort in this.

When I look out, I know if something is happening outside, I am protected. The officer that is waiting below at the stoplight, whomever he or she may be, does not know whether I am black or white, but I feel secure, regardless.

Before I write any further I must say that I include the family of Mr. Newby and Officer Mattingly in my thoughts and prayers.

I must also say that I am not a police officer, and I feel that I am completely free of bias when it comes to this debate.

I cannot fathom how I would feel if my son?s life was taken by a police officer.

Along the same line of thought, I would be just as upset if a drug dealer took the life of my son. If Officer Mattingly was undercover, selling drugs, why would he even have had an encounter with Mr. Newby if something illegal was not about to transpire.

Unfortunately, the ?system? should have intervened in the life of Mr. Newby before Officer Mattingly or the LMPD did.

Police officers get paid very little for putting their life on the line every day.

No matter your race, religion, social status or opinion of the police department, when something happens so that your life feels threatened, what is the first call you make: the police department.

And that call is made without second thought.

Despite the negative public recognition the Louisville Police Department has receive lately, I will continue to take comfort when I look out my window and see the reassuring view of a Crown Victoria poised like a guard dog waiting to protect me.

God bless the family of Mr. Newby and God bless Officer Mattingly and his family as well.

I think that Officer Mattingly was already tried and convicted by the media and by the citizens. Here we go again, where are the rights of the police officer, we are human also. A normal law abiding citizen is innocent until proven guilty, but a police officer is always guilty until proven innocent. The thing that bothers me the most is this man was fighting for Officer Mattingly's service weapon. I was not at the scene and neither were the rest of those law abiding citizens, so how can a man be found guilty if you yourself don't know all of the facts. I'm not condoning anything, because I wasn't there. I am backing a fellow brother in need. Best of luck McKenzie.

This is the first time I have logged on to the FOP site. I have a concern that my opinion here may be unpopular, and I don't want to hide behind any anonymous curtains, so let me say up front that my name is Phil Ardery Jr., I'm in the phone book on Greenlawn Road under "Ardery, Cecilia and Philip Jr.", and if anyone wants to send me email they can do so at ard@thepoint.net .

I don't know of any other labor organization that can match the success of the FOP in representing a work force collectively. I believe the FOP should support strong departmental procedures and disciplines when it comes to the use of lethal force by members of the department. I hope that the FOP leadership will consider with "cool" heads before committing to a posture and set of actions in the current "hot" situation. Please do what best serves the future interests of FOP members and the interests of workers generally.

Thank you,

Phil Ardery Jr.

Maybe the Chief or the Mayor can sit down with McKenzie's little boy and explain how a crack dealing, gun toting thug tried to rob his daddy. His daddy had to shoot the drug dealer to protect his and the lives of other innocent people in the community. Now daddy is fired and is facing an indictment because of the decisions of this gun toting, drug dealing thug. Maybe they can sit down and comfort him while daddy goes to his trial. Maybe they can explain why daddy no longer has insurance for his sons special medical needs. Maybe they can explain why there is no longer money coming in to pay bills and buy food. Maybe they can explain why a certain group of people can call his daddy a murderer on the television and the spineless politicians turn their back on him. The Chief will obvious throw anybody under the bus and that is why I include him as one of the spineless politicians. He is nothing but a Deputy Mayor with a badge and does not give a damn about anybody but himself. He obvious does not give a damn about McKenzie, McKenzie's little boy or McKenzie's wife. Chief White, Mayor Abramson and Commonwealth Attorney Dave Stengel are the spineless polititcians that I am talking about. They are a disgrace to this City and Police Department. Shame on all of you and as bad is it might be, maybe someday something this traumatic can be returned to you and your families.

Here is some perspective on the situation:

In December 1997, our current Chief Robert White was appointed as an Assistant Chief of Police serving under Marion Barry on the Washington DC Metro Police. In 1998, Washington DC was the "Murder Capital of the USA" In 1997, 50% of Black men in D.C. ages 18-35 were in prison or jail, probation or parole, out on bond or being sought on a warrant.

Marion Barry is easily one of the most colorful public officals in United States history. After serving as mayor of Washington, DC for 12 years, he was arrested for smoking crack in a hotel room in 1990 (caught on hidden camera no less) and forced to step down. After serving six months in a federal prison, he was inexplicibly re-elected in 1994.

Perhaps Mayor Barry's legacy can best be described in his own words:

* "If you take out the killings, Washington actually has a very very low crime rate."

* "First, it was not a strip bar, it was an erotic club. And second, what can I say? I'm a night owl."

* "The brave men who died in Vietnam, more than 100% of which were black, were the ultimate sacrifice."

* "I am a great mayor; I am an upstanding Christian man; I am an intelligent man; I am a deeply educated man; I am a humble man."

Jerry, What were you thinking? WOW, after reading this message board and a "google" search of Chief White.................people have skeletons, but OH MY! Secondly, maybe Chief should go into sales, because he sure SOLD Jerry!.

Chief, it's not too late to drop the "chief gig" and try out for the "Apprentice II", my money is on you! This guy was hated and not trusted by civilians, officers and the media in D.C. and Greensboro. Luckily, the Louisville media(God love them) has made him a J. Edgar"Super Cop" Hoover (ooops he wore dresses)...make that Super Chief White!

I think I'll refer to him as Chief Joe McCarthy White!Watchin' from the 3rd turn in the infield!

With all sincere, Mckenzie family does need prayer. Their beloved son needs to tell the truth. This man holding a weapon that fires bullets. He wounded the suspect, no shots was returned. He intend to kill. We have good cops bad cops, I believe we have more bad cops holding positions they don't deserve. So prayer is needed for all cops, good bad.

To each and everyone of you who think the cops are bad or as one put it they are the drug dealers.

I have a way that you can solve the problem, DON'T CALL THEM... when someone is killing you or trying to rob you don't call the Police.

You only want them to come to your rescue and then you ***** about them if they don't move fast enough for you.

YOU don't trust them, YOU don't want them, then DON"T call them.

Lets see if you can do it. I know you don't have what it takes to become a police officer, only to ***** what you don't know anything about. You think the chief is doing a good job, get the west end to become their own city and hire him as you police chief, because alot of people don't care for him or trust him.

There are plenty of real victims out in the world who look for the police to help them and they trust them.

CHIEF WHITE, I HOPE YOU CAN READ THIS IF YOUR NOT TOO HIGH FROM YOUR DOPE YOU'VE BEEN SMOKING. THE MEMBERS OF YOUR DEPARTMENT HATE YOU AND AND HAVE ZERO RESPECT FOR YOU. YOU ARE NOTHING BUT A COWARD!!!!

Chief White has no balls to fire him in a letter instead of face to face. That's just what I want as a police Chief, a coward who doesn't have the balls to stand behind our officers and who will give into political pressure so that the 2 weeks of Derby goes with out protests. I sure hope and pray that this decision doesn't get our officers hurt. I truelly believe criminals are going to see this as the police will think twice before using force on them, and will try the officers. I hope Chief White and his friend Mayor Jerry can live with this on their head if something happens to an officer. I know I will be knocking on their doors if something happens to my husband or any officer that god forbid gets hurt or killed as a result of this.

Lets get real people, this is just another case of a loser family, wanting a check$$ from the city. They get all dressed up in their sunday bests trying to make it look like their the Huckstables (Cosby) and their son was a DRUG DEALER for crying out loud. Furthermore, maybe we should really listen to this Colman idiot, I would never say REV, its not like he is convicted felon or anything. Plus his son is doing 12 years in the pen for DRUGS etc, after the State Police broke em off some. He cant even raise his own family but he's in the paper everyday like he's a legit.

I've about had it with living in Colemanville. It's embarassing to live in a city that lets a handful of protesters decide how it will be run. We look like a bunch of yellow bellied, spineless wimps. I cannot believe a police officer is going through all of this because he was doing his job! A job WE sent him out there to do. It makes me sick that this is the thanks we give him. I'm honestly and truly embarassed to say I live in (gulp) Louisville. I can only imagine how ignorant and stupid we must look.

Feeling sorry for drug dealers and refusing to let the police do their jobs will help us become a crime mecca before we can turn around (I say we're well on our way with all the recent murders). You want to deal drugs? Come to Louisville! We welcome you to our city. You want to fight a cop for his weapon and carry your own firearm? Come to Louisville! Our chief says we should "Let you go". I'm sure if we have room for these guys we will also welcome armed robbers, petty thieves and even gang members with open arms. After all, we judge not by right and wrong, but by what the 10 protesters want us to do. If they say your behavior is ok, well doggone it, it's ok!

Our city is going down the toilet. I only wish I were able to get the hell out right now, before the crime escalates and our property values go to practically nothing.

Lets see..if Michael Newby could have completed what he set out to do (MURDER MCKENZIE) there would be not one protest. McKenzie's family would have a settlement from the Federal and State Government and would be taken care of for the most part. McKenzie won the fight for his life and now he and his family lose everything. THIS IS A SAD DAY WHEN MCKENZIE'S LITTLE BOY WOULD BE TAKEN CARE OF BETTER IF HIS DADDY WOULD HAVE LOST HIS LIFE. NOW THEY HAVE LOST AN INCOME, INSURANCE AND NOW HE HAS TO FIGHT FOR HIS FREEDOM...THIS IS SUCH BULLSHIT!!!!!P.S. CHIEF WHITE...YOU ARE A COWARD!!!!!

Chief White, has your life ever been in jeopardy? You smoked dope in D.C. according to the folks up there....did you feel threatened when you were purchasing it? Or did you get it from your mayor at the time?

Chief White needs to look at what 12 jurors said. They obviously disagreed with his opinion. Chief White is black and obviously prefers to support a black drug dealer that's violating the law rather than a police office who has sworn to enforce the law and is risking his life to live up to his pledge. A person only has to look at what the Officer from North Carolina said to know what kind of Chief White is. Looks like Jerry didn't do so well when he made his choice.
