RE: FOP not to endorse a chief candidate

I'm not sure what you meant by saying I think I'm more important than I am. I'm no more important than anyone else that posts on here. I have an opinion too and I'm trying to persuade the original poster that he is wrong-through debate and honest dialogue. I'm not bashing anyone. "Naïve" is not a fighting word. It's simply my description of a thought process regarding a topic. I've been doing this job for over 20 years and politics have always been part of it. Who the chief is, how we police, what laws we enforce, and what support the department and the officers receive are all affected by politics. Why do you think KRS 431 was amended to limit arrests for misdemeanors and take our discretion away? Because a legislator sponsored HB 463 and a bunch of other legislators passed it. Politics, no? How do you think we got the right to collectively bargain and have a contract unlike most all (except about a dozen) other police departments in KY? By lobbying politicians to pass a collective bargaining bill, that's how. I could go on and on but my point is that policing is entwined in the political world whether we like it or not. I also think you are mistaken by saying that only politicians who can't win want the endorsement of the police. I'm pretty sure that all the candidates for mayor this last time around sought police endorsement. I think that most all of the metro council members up for election last cycle went to the FOP and asked for endorsements as well-even ones that were going to win hands down.

I agree it can be a tricky thing to deal with but we can't ignore that politics influences our job.
