There is a difference between his situation and yours. Your situation was well publicized before you were ever charged; therefore, the media was able to talk about it without any contempt after it was expunged. (It was already in the public domain). If his charges are exposed by the media after it had been expunged already, somebody is in contempt of court. I caution any police officer to not discuss someones expunged record. You may think it's harmless, but you could be facing some serious contempt charges.
