I say CONGRATULATIONS to all who were promoted.

To those who just made Sergeant, remember if your people are getting wet, cold and hungry, you should be too. You should never ask others to do what you can't, or won't do personally. Your job is NOT to make the next promotion, or to even worry about it; Your only job it is to be a leader, manager (I hate this word, but it is true), counselor, co-worker and friend (If you take care of your people, they will make every effort to take care of you).

If you fail at any of the above, you will not be a good boss. Remember who you enjoyed working for and with and what they did that worked and model yourself after that.

Simple rules:

Stand by your people and your word. Period.

Back your people.

LISTEN, and shut up so you can hear, what is said.

Roll Call is for business, period.

Praise loudly in public.

Discipline quietly in private.

When someone is complaining, listen and speak calmly and quietly – this WILL calm them down and give you the

chance to make them see what they are missing.

When something goes wrong, it is ALWAYS the sergeant's fault (if you own it early, there is little that can be done to the troops or you later).

FINALLY: Remember that officers and sergeants share the same contract for a reason, so don't forget who or what you are.

CONGRATULAIONS and may God bless each and every one of us.
