and, as I am about to retire in a few short weeks, I will offer my sentiment-

if you are thinking of becoming a police officer- DON'T!! It's a suck a$$ job, with ZERO respect and more hassle and headache than you can ever imagine!!

IF you just absolutely have your heart set on being able to have a badge and carry a gun- go Federal; FBI, ATF, DEA, Homeland Security, hell, even Border Patrol. Pay is way better and your bosses aren't bloated A-holes who simply took a test to get promoted and then forgot that they were ever the police to begin with. You have to have a college degree for this Mickey Mouse outfit to hire you now anyway, you might as well get a job that you'll actually be able to pay back your student loans from.
