Hey Paul,

Why don't you hook someone for a robbery 2nd, and see if he's in jail tomorrow? Or, a TICS 1st...or, anything short of a violent attack on police. What's up with the smartass comments today? You act like people actually stay in jail when they're charged with something.

Well, they don't. If you'd like to debate the issue, I'll do so happily. The vast majority of people arrested for most any crime in this city either get ROR'd, get a bond set at a ridiculously low amount, or get HIP. Did you know we have at least one person (I think two) currently out on home incarceration, while they are pending a murder case? While we are overcrowded at the jail, it's not for a lack of judges letting everyone go - we book in almost 50,000 people a year now. When I first started, I remember hitting 40,000 - and that was quite a while back. If you fine folks would stop locking up everyone you see, we'd have more room in the jail for the ones who need to be there.

Of course, had the county built a real jail, instead of trying to make one out of a gutted MSD building, we might have more room....ten years, and we already need a new one. Nothing like walking over a pedway (inside the secure area) that crosses over Liberty, and seeing cracks 1/2" wide in the floor. Elevators break down at least once per day, and all kinds of other problems exist. Maybe we can get a real building the next time...I doubt it, though.

You guys are locking up so many, we had to use the court holds upstairs just to house the overflow. And then, you wonder why so many get out. We can't house them, and are one federal lawsuit away from another consent decree. I know LMPD is primarily made up of folks with 8 years or less now, but a few of you should remember the "federal cut" that we had about a decade ago. That ended with the opening of our new facility, but one good lawsuit will bring it back. Then, you might as well let the dopers sell their drugs and the crackheads smoke it. If you think the door revolves quickly now, wait until a federal court orders us under another consent decree for overcrowding. You'll make an arrest at the beginning of your shift, and see them back on the street before the end of it.

Do us all a favor - stop arresting people. Cite if you must, but try and limit the arrests to what are necessary. I understand that some people talk their way right into jail, but really - stop it already. The jail is bulging at the seams, our boss isn't interested in hiring new people (one academy for the year, and we're already way short staffed), and the overcrowding will just force a federal lawsuit again. If you don't believe me, just watch. Some of the inmates who remember the days of the federal cut are getting out of prison and coming back thru again - one of them will be the one to file, and win. Won't you guys on the street be soooo happy then?

Are you the keeper of the jail inmates now??? worry about things that you can control and forget about the rest ..I guess you are the ONE that is going to save society from evildoers. Thank god i have 11 months until i can retire . The police have changed and i will probably get locked up myself if ever pulled over by one of these new " I know everything " cops with a smart mouth.
