O.K. first I'm not a C.O. Secondly you cant have it both ways, preaching unity on one hand, calling people sell outs on the other (except for the officers with 8+ years and military commanders riiight) My post was written both to congratulate Edlen on his career and make my point about needing a united front against those who treat us badly. I meant no offense.

That being said, I'm sure you are an excellent officer, are above the petty name calling and "my division is better than yours crap." At some point you may even consider taking the promotional exams, maybe then you can make positive changes in the administration instead of whining about it. I agree with you 100% that the stripes don't make a person the best cop. Which is why everyone starts out on the beat, just like you did. I know that loyalty up-loyalty down is a idealistic concept these days, but I still believe in it, and think we have some good C.O.'s Edlen is a good guy and deserves respect for his service. That's all I was trying to say.

I agree with you on two points. Unless you have some former type of leadership experience, I.E. military or other L.E. positons, 5 years is not enough to prepair anyone to be a supervisor. I also agree that the command are sellouts. I can provide a reason for that however. When the department got rid of Captains in the roll of division commanders, they created exactly what they wanted, a huge group of yes men/women. When you can be dropped from a Major back to Lt. without any process other than the Chief's order, you tend to tow the party line. I would hate to lose my 100k + a year salary to drop back down to 80-90K, That is why you get the loyalty up, and not down. It's all about me-ism on this department for the command. Now there are some good Lt's out there but they are a civil service rank and are protected. Just like Capt's use to be. I hope our department comes together and fights for what we deserve on the next contract. Enough of this Semper I f**k the other guy crap.
