Everytime you respond to him, you are just adding fuel (and ammunition) to the fire. Nothing you say is going to change him, so why are you wasting energy that could be better devoted to getting the facts out to the people who CAN make a difference, the community.

When is the last time that you sat down and talked to someone about the realities of this situation? Showed true comparisons to what officers in other jurisdictions of similar size make - what other benefits they get? The whole cost of the take-home fleet? Just trading insults brings you down to his level.

We need a separate website that spells out the facts, provides documents, etc. to show why the take home fleet is a benefit that has always been an unwritten part of the compensation package, and how having those cars on the road does make a difference to public safety. And really DO it - don't, as happened to my spouse the other day, broken down on I-64, get passed by six marked units, none of which made the slightest effort to stop? (Yes, I know they might have been on runs, but that isn't what we are supposed to do. Help was coming, but they didn't know that.) Stop, render aid, make sure they know you are off-duty. That's what we are supposed to do.

Then by all means, quit referencing what you saw, and SHOW the comment.
