As a dispatcher I have become very close friends with several officers as well as fire and ems people. When I heard the news this morning I instantly felt sick. I can remember 4 years ago when the outcome was much much worse. I do not know Andrea personally but I have talked to her both on the phone and the radio several times. It appears that police shootings are becoming more and more common lately, maybe because of the economy and maybe people are just crazy. For whatever reason, Not to sound like a broken record but there really is no such thing as a routine run. When you hear me notify the Sgt that I am holding runs in the division I appreciate those of you that wanna help clear those up but I would MUCH rather hold a run then something happen to any of you...they can wait!! now is the time to be vigilent and know that yes it can happen to you. Please dont cancel your back up on something that "sounds" like its nothing because again you just never know. With the MDTs that you guys (most of you) have you can put yourself out on stuff like buisness checks and even traffic stops..take a second and make sure that your dispatcher know that you have done that and we acknowledge where you are....when you call for help those few seconds that I spend scrolling my screen for your car number seem like hours...at least if I put you there I have a conscious memory of your location. as far as traffic stops CALL OUT ON THEM! I may seem like i have a million people talking at the same time and i know that some officers have developed the habit of only calling out when they want to search a car or when they get that "feeling". What happens when you dont get that "feeling" and the normal looking guy that you only stopped for an expired tag just lost his job and his mind and happens to have a weapon in the car. I am not at all trying to tell any of you how to do your job, i just want you all to know that you have family and friends that love and respect you for the job that you do....and as "radio" it is part my job to get you to your favorite radio transmission of the night or day...stand by for off going roll call!!

I know that there have been some love/hate relationships between officers and dispatchers probably always will be, but when the crap hits the fan...doesnt matter former county or former city or fresh from the academy...we stick together.. god bless you all be safe and may you always be 10-86!

As a former Jeferson County resident I lerned to appreciate the then Jefferson County Police Department. However: I think the treatment during transport of the officer that was shot on Ronwood was a bit over done! Closing down I-65 and police excorts were a little much. At one time I saw six (6) crusiers escorting, six (6) crusiers sitting at the off ramp and I have no idea how many other members of LMPD were involved in the transport. I want to ask the question---"Would a regular taxpaying citizen get this treatment"-----NO. After all it is the taxpayers dollars that keep the roads repaired and they couldn't even use the road during the transport!!!!!!! I am sure the officer that got shot (and according to the news reports, exact proceedure was not followed) There are dozens of people transported by ambulance each day and they certainly do not get a police escort. Hey, the officers do not show up regularly for court appearences and yet I have never know a officer who did not complain that the courts release the people they arrest---wonder why!!!!!!

NiceCall

April 8th, 2009 @ 7:52PM (15 years ago)

I think by policy you still have to call out on anything you put yourself on anyway so no debate there....I am guilty of doing things and not calling out on them, chaulk it up to beat pride, not wanting to be called a squirel, or whatever it's just plain dumb on my part. I agree with the post and will call out on everthing because we don't know what were getting into...what if it is a "routine stop" but on the way to the vehicle you get sideswiped? She doesn't even know your out on something. Thank you for your post Jen you and all dispatchers mean lot to us. Andrea get better!!!!

P.S. MEOW, MEOW, MEOW, MEOW....MEOW, MEOW, MEOW, MEOW

Typical of what I have come to expect fom you self proclaimed heroes, you deem yourselves worthy of services and perks the regular citizenry are not. Who was policing this city while all of you were closing down interstates and escorting your ambulance with a non-life threatening injury?

How many other people have received road clsures and escorts to the hospital? Youre not heroes, youre just greedy arrogant a-holes who think you are better than everyone else.

It makes me sick to my stomach to see that some people actually had the NERVE to get on here complain about roads being shut down for an officer being shot. There are no bounds to how low people will go to put us down. To me these people are no better than the crowd in Oakland who taunted the officers who were shot and killed, and I am ashamed to say I still go out of my way to protect these people every day.

Andrea get well soon. But I think we need to thank the gentleman who ultimately saved the day out there. If it wasn't for him Andrea and the girlfriend would probably be dead. So I would like to thank the good samaritan neighbor who rushed over to save the day and who was shot in the process. Thank you sir for your service.

Andrea, my prayers, and those of my family, are with you. You have the entire fraternity that is our job behind you, supporting your recovery. James and the boys, please know that we will be there for anything you need.

To the good Samaritan (whom I will not name in this forum) who assisted our sister in her time of need: Know that those of us who know you now consider you to part of our extended family.

With the utmost of respect,

7th Division Officer Shot While Responding To Domestic Call

April 9th, 2009 @ 8:21PM (15 years ago)

I have a question. Should LMPD consider 2 person patrol cars? I always worry about the first unit to go onscene of a run. While no call is routine and priority runs always get 2 or more officers dispatched, there is usually some time before the 2nd unit arrives. Alot may happen in that time. As a person working in law enforcement and with a Police family I worry about exactly the type of situation that happened yesterday.

I know some agencies still use 2 person units, and I believe it was done by both the city and county in the past. I believe every officer would be safer to have a partner with them all the time. (not just on detail days when trouble is expected) I've heard the explanation that we don't have the manpower, or it costs too much. 2 man units would probably cut fuel and maintenence costs on the cars the Mayor doesn't want you to have anyway. No ammount of cost or any manpower issue is worth more than an officer's life!...EVER!

To the men and women of the 7th division and all of LMPD, know that you are respected and loved. Don't let negative posters get you down. They don't understand that we are a family, (literally in my case) and would do anything for each other.

P.S. Praying for you Andrea, Get well soon!

If Uppers Really Cared About Officer Safety

April 10th, 2009 @ 3:12PM (15 years ago)

When a trainee goes through the academy, they are taught "Officer safety is paramount". That notion is stamped into them throughout their training/career (which it always should/will be). It seems two officers are usually dispatched to one call so it would only make sense to put two officers in one car which would drastically improve the safety of the officers. Although "the powers that be" say they are also concerned with officer safety, they aren't.

a) 20 Officers = 20 Cars = An optical illusion to the public to seem as if there is a larger police presence

b) 20 Officers = 10 Cars = Improved officer safety and lower gas prices

I'm not going to 'Monday-Morning-Quarterback' any situation in reference to one vs. two man units, but improved officer safety in two man units is common sense, this isn't rocket science. Two man vehicles are also more effective in detecting crime since the passenger doesn't have to concentrate on driving they can observe more. I'm a little shocked that they won't go to two man units since it would cut gas prices in half; but I guess that wasted money is already being compensated by the officers who pay $100/$160 for their car each month (who didn't see that rebuttal coming).

Thanks to the Good Samaritan. It reminds me of the story about the wolves and the sheepdog. Sometimes the sheep can become warriors like the sheepdog. If someone could post that story I think it is fitting. And for the people complaining about traffic shutdowns. I am sure if your family member was an officer you would want the same. A 15 minute delay on your ride to work are you for real. Get a friggin life and got to an anti police website if your going to run off with the ********.

What Are Policemen Made Of?

By Paul Harvey

Don't credit me with the mongrel prose: it has many parents-at least 420,000 of them: Policemen.

A Policeman is a composite of what all men are, mingling of a saint and sinner, dust and deity.

Gulled statistics wave the fan over the stinkers, underscore instances of dishonesty and brutality because they are "new". What they really mean is that they are exceptional, unusual, not commonplace.

Buried under the frost is the fact: Less than one-half of one percent of policemen misfit the uniform. That's a better average than you'd find among clergy!

What is a policeman made of? He, of all men, is once the most needed and the most unwanted. He's a strangely nameless creature who is "sir" to his face and "fuzz" to his back

He must be such a diplomat that he can settle differences between individuals so that each will think he won.

But...If the policeman is neat, he's conceited; if he's careless, he's a bum. If he's pleasant, he's flirting;if not, he's a grouch.

He must make an instant decision which would require months for a lawyer to make.

But...If he hurries, he's careless; if he's deliberate, he's lazy. He must be first to an accident and infallible with his diagnosis. He must be able to start breathing, stop bleeding, tie splints and, above all, be sure the victim goes home without a limp. Or expect to be sued.

The police officer must know every gun, draw on the run, and hit where it doesn't hurt.He must be able to whip two men twice his size and half his age without damaging his uniform and without being "brutal". If you hit him, he's a coward. If he hits you, he's a bully.

A policeman must know everything-and not tell. He must know where all the sin is and not partake.

A policeman must, from a single strand of hair, be able to describe the crime, the weapon and the criminal- and tell you where the criminal is hiding.

But...If he catches the criminal, he's lucky; if he doesn't, he's a dunce. If he gets promoted, he has political pull; if he doesn't, he's a dullard. The policeman must chase a bum lead to a dead-end, stake out ten nights to tag one witness who saw it happen-but refused to remember.

The policeman must be a minister, a social worker, a diplomat, a tough guy and a gentleman.

And, of course, he'd have to be genius....For he will have to feed a family on a policeman's salary.

I don't think it makes a difference to the dead cop and his family if it was an auto accident, shooting or a heart attack---he or she is still dead. Funny how you only use the statistics you like (you rule out anything other than a gunshot). Go take some no-doze and 4 cups of coffee and try not to O.D. trucker.
