"When my dad was on the department they had to share the cars with other shift workers"

Well when your dad was on, they usually worked their shift drunk as he11, making their way from bar to bar across their beat. They also used to flick the ashes from their cigarettes into the barrel of the 12 guage shotgun in the upright mount between the seats. Then when your dad was on, they used to beat the he11 outta people they arrested with hickory nightsticks. They used to call it a "wood shampoo". When your dad was on, they used to shoot suspects in the back as they ran from the scene of crimes. They used to call that "fleeing felon". I have other examples but I think I made my point. If you are to stupid to see it, let me spell it out for you. It's not 1969 ********, it's 2009. ALOT of things have changed! Now don't get me wrong, I have tremendous respect for old time coppers that did a difficult job for very little money with very few benefits. As a matter-o-fact, I've drank and bought more than my share of cold beer with cops from that generation. I look up to alot of them as heroes and role models. They are the ones who told me the stories about the examples I cited and when they told me theses stories about how much different things were in the old days, they did so without shame or regret and I paid attention. Your dad would probably be ashamed that you took his name in vain to direct criticism at us on this website. And even if your dad is not ashamed of you, you should be ashamed of yourself. You or the "Drive-by Trucker" will never change our minds about the situation we are in or the means by which we choose to respond.

You're another one of those people who love to talk about what police do or don't do and try to tell them how to do their jobs and haven't got a clue about what being a cop is. You wouldn't tell a business man how to do his job, you're just a balless wonder, I'm sure your dad took care of business when he was on, (if that's true), but I'm sure you are a major disappointment to him. Sorry you couldn't get on the police department but not everybody makes the cut, wannabe.

I am retired from the LMPD. I was on the County, then the LMPD for a total of 31 years. It is a fact that it costs the city less money for the take home car program than it did when your dad turned in his car at the end of every shift. The cars were replaced about every 6 months in those days. Now they last about 6 or 7 years and are well taken care of by the officers. This fee charged by the city to pay for the privilege of take home cars isn't a way to save money, but rather a way to make money from officers that were already making too little pay. You can't compare today's police department with the departments from the 50's or 60's. The County started the take home car program in 1972, specifically to save money and to have more police presence on the road at any given time, and it worked well. The City soon followed because it proved to work well. The two departments never did this just to be kind to the officers, but rather because it was more cost effective and was better for the community. If your father really was a police officer he should be able to explain all of this to you.

I think you are looking for the word "their". That is possessive. There is more of a location. Just a thought.
