You win the cookie!

Schools are exactly the reason why I'll be putting my house on the market in the very near future. When I built my house 5 years ago, the only reason I built in Jefferson county was to keep my take home. But if we lose the labor board decision, I plan to move my family to Bullitt county. Better public schools, cheaper land, more house for the same amount of money, cheaper taxes. My wife and I had discussed sending our child to private school in Jefferson county but now, public schools in Bullitt county seem to be the way to go. Yeah, we might be incurring an added expense as far as gas and maintenance costs using our POV to and from work but I'm pretty sure it won't even be close to the cost of private school. Not to mention the amount of time I'll now be at home with my wife and child instead of working every off-duty job to cover the cost of private school tuition. To me, that reason alone has helped me make my mind up to turn the car in.

I think you missed the whole point of the busing riots. Folks weren't in the streets throwing rocks and bottles at police in football helmets because their kids just had to ride a bus. The point of the anger and outrage was where their children were being bussed to. From Middletown to Shawnee, from Fairdale to the frozen tundra of Flaget`. I wouldn't have cared if my kid had to ride a bus for an hour a day if they were being taken to a better school but kids from good school districts were being driven an hour each way to some of the worst schools in Jefferson county. Not to mention, schools in some pretty dangerous neighborhoods. But lets keep this discussion on topic. If you live outside of Jefferson county, that is a decision that you made freely. I'm sorry if might lose the opportunity to drive your car to the county line but again, you are going to have to make a decision. Pay $2200 a year to park your car at Walgreen's on Preston, or take that POV on into roll call. No matter what you decide, do it for yourself and what is best for your family. Who gives a sh!t if some slob calls you a scab.

I moved to the country in Indiana in 2002 and gave up a take home car to get my kids out of JCPS and you get more house for the money, lower taxes, I got 10 acres and house with a barn for a heck of alot less than what it cost here. I got better schools, quiter surroundings, safer areas. When I was off I was off, I didn't have to do anything off duty or feel obligated to anyway. I didn't have to stop for wrecks, stranded motorist or get flagged down to answer questions or give directions, and still was only 30 minutes from work about the same when I lived out in the county. The question isn't why live out of county, it's why live in it.
