Thats exactly was i was saying. Everyone is going to have an excuse. You dont need a car to work off duty. Corrections has been working off duty for years without a marked unit. Yeah you cant get certain off duty jobs but there is alot out there that doesnt require a car.

I also want to stand with the FOP but when FATHEAD put in his threat about never getting the cars back it bothered me the way he wanted it to bother me. Can he really do all of this legally? I mean in his own way, he IS taking our tiny raise by trying to charge us for the cars!

HELP!!!!

Do you really HAVE to have the car to work offduty - or do you just think you need it? Talk to your offduty employers, I suspect many will agree that you don't have to have the car. Buy a used Crown Vic if you have to, fit it out with a spotlight and a couple of antennas, they won't know the difference.

Here's a question - if you get hurt on that off-duty job, then what? Will you get workers comp from them? What if you are so hurt that you are totally disabled, then what? If you can't eat on your regular income, you are living beyond your means.

And there are no guarantees, but there are also no guarantees that they won't jack it up more in a few months.

You have to make a decision based on what's best for you and yours. I do not buy into the "sacrifice of the few for the good of the many" philosophy. The so called "many" don't pay your mortgage or your car payment. Your kids don't open presents on Christmas morning from the "many." You do what you have to in order to provide. Call me a greedy bast*rd, but you look out for number one. Those spreading the rumor that the FOP will sue non-compliers to the mandatory parking verdict... come get some. Unless the FOP is willing to foot paying a portion of my bills, get off my back. The take home car policy should have been written into contract negotations twenty years ago... then we would not be having this fight. Flame me is you wish, I really don't care, but I need to keep my car.

We all have to stick together for this to work! You will still be able to work off-duty, there are alot of jobs around where you don't need a car. I work about 15 hours a week and don't need the use of a car. Not only that, but once everyone turns their cars in, off-duy employers are going to have to make exceptions to not needing a marked or unmarked cars due to the simple fact that NO ONE will have them (except Shively, J-town, etc., but NO METRO).

The $160 monthly fee is only temporary, it is going to go up! Jerry is all but telling us that by saying this is not a long term fix and the next fiscal quarter is going to be worse. In fact, he says he expects it not to get better for 18 months! Do you honestly think he will leave it at $160 (if you work off-duty)? Just six months ago we were paying nothing, then $60, now a few months later $160 and then 6 months from now $???.

I am concerned for my family too. It is all the more difficult for us now to raise and provide for our families, but these are the cards we have been dealt by the current administration. We will have to work all the much harder to provide for in ways we have not been used to, but we can and will do it. If we stay united and confront this situation NOW and not concede to these continually paycuts, we will be better off financially in the long run when it comes to contract negotiations. If they don't have the cars to hold over our heads, they can not take anymore money from us and our families!

If you need off duty to survive then you should have reconsidered your occupation. If you live within your means you can buy an auctioned police car for less than 2 grand and work off duty gigs or you can still deliver pizzas in your personal vehicle, take a second job at Home Depot or Lowes.
