Had an interesting discussion with a family member today - they truly do not comprehend that the issue of the cars is not one where the cops get all the benefit - if they have never had an off-duty cop help them, why would they? LMPD (well, the FOP) hasn't done a good job of clearly and quantifiably demonstrating how much uncompensated service officers have done in exchange for the so called "free" cars. Specifics, not generalities - over the last months, go back and recreate how many stops/assists that you have made. Publicize the list.
It isn't clear to the general public that the vote was to turn back the cars.

Here's a thought, and it will be painful, I know. Everyone forgo off-duty completely for one week. Park your cars as much as you possibly can. When you are driving around in your POV, have your portable on, and keep track of the calls you could help with, but can't because you aren't in a marked unit. Note things that you see, but can't respond to, because you are in your POV. Then publicize it.
