They had lethal force and they took it a step down and tazed the guy. The family and the ACLU should be happy that the brave officers, who put their lives on the line every day, tried to down the situation when they could have used lethal force. But then it would be an isue with Christopher 2X or the next liberal.

I WOULD LIKE TO COMMENT ON THE USE OF TASERS. I LOST MY COUSIN AUGUST 2005 DUE TO BEING TASERED BY L.M.P.D YOU MAY OF NEVER HEARD OF THIS CASE DUE TO THE FACT THAT HIS DEATH WAS BLAMED ON BELLS MANIA AS WELL. I FEEL THAT THE CORONER AS WELL AS THE L.M.P.D USE THIS CAUSE OF DEATH TO AVOID LAWSUITS. YES, JAMES COLLETT HAD A HISTORY OF RUNNING FROM THE POLICE MAYBE IT WAS BECAUSE THEY SHOT HIM IN 2003 WITH A HANDGUN WHICH ALMOST RESULTED IN LOSING HIS LIFE. I WOULD RATHER BE SHOT IN THE LEG ON ANY GIVEN DAY THAN TO BE SHOT BY A TASER THAT CARRIES 250,000 VOLTS. MAYBE ONE DAY PEOPLE WILL WISE UP, MAYBE WHEN IT'S ONE OF THEIR LOVED ONES !!!!! R.I.P JAMES COLLETT

I totally agree that the taser was not the cause of Bass' death, and the taser is a much more viable option rather than having to punch him in the face or use a baton, both of which would have caused more injuries (or death) and exposed the officers to greater risks of being injured. I'm not the biggest fan of the ACLU either, but I'm not sure I understand the Soviet reference in the illustration. But nice artwork however. On the news the ACLU person said something to the extent of 'tasers should only be used if deadly force is required' - well in that case I'll just use my pistol instead, it's 100 times more reliable than that yellow plastic piece of junk that was issued to me. If I was in a life threatening situation where I really thought I was about to be killed by some crazy maniac who was assaulting me, I'd rather take my chances with my sidearm instead of some electronic device that's considered the equivalent of OC spray.

Congratulations on your (pause for effect) well written and unbiased blog. You for got to mention a few key issues.

"Bass fought with the officers and struck one officer in the head with a flashlight. He then attempted to take the service weapon of the other officer" is the story given by the officers.

"According to Isaac Bass' brother with whom he had been fighting, "Isaac Bass had been drinking and smoking crack all day long and was extremely violent."" this is the statement of the person he was fighting with

Has it become the job of LMPD to play judge jury and executioner? The man was UNARMED and is now dead. Does this not cause alarm to anybody? Alleged drug use and resisting arrest does not contstitute the death penalty! Because the ACLU is asking for accountability, that makes them evil? Does the police department truly fail to understand why the public wants answers when someone dies at their hands? There is not simply good vs evil, wrong and right, there is a gray area and the public deserves to know the full truth of any questionable actions on the part of it's police officers especially when those actions result in the death of a human being.

So now the without ACLUe wants us to only use our Tasers in situations that call for deadly force? What are these morons smoking?? Don't they realize that deadly force is met with deadly force, not with less lethat force? Have they not read state law or the force continuim? The police are allowed to use force higher than the suspect is using on them. Those are the rules. Our Police don't have to follow the Marquis of Queensberry rules. The supreme court has validated this. We value the lives of Police Officerand their ability to protect their own lives as more important than inconvenience casued to a suspect.

This organization is so inept that they are a laughing stock. They are like Greenpeace and the Sierra Club with their fanatical ideas and rhetoric. Because Taser was found liable in a lower California court (which are known to rule in favor of anything contorversial, for God's sake they banned lead bullets throughout the state to help save the condors!) in 1 death does not mean that the ruling will stand when it is taken higher.

The convoluted and paranoid schitzophrenic thought process of the ACLU jumps right to a conclusion that is so obsusurd that it denies any rational belief whatsoever. Because they think that Tasers are dangerous they should be only used when an Officer would use his gun. Sorry, I hesitate to use this phrase, but WTF?? If I am in a situation that calls for deadly force then I am going to use my gun and permanantly remove the scumbag from the gene pool. If someone else uses a gun or tries to kil me then I will kill him first. Plain and simple. No fancy words or phrases. My kids wil still have a Dad tonight, my wife will stil have a husband. I will go home before the bad guy does.

Kudos to Chief White for standing strong on the issue. Even the big headed one Mayor Jer thinks they are a good idea.

The ACLU doesn't care about things like facts.

Officer injuries are down

Officers have had to use deadly force considerably less

Suspect Injuries are way down

Suspect's deaths as the result of deadly force are way down

Lives of both Officers, Suspects and Innocent bystanders have been saved by their usage

Oh no, they would rather we went back to the good old days and fought hand to hand with the bad guys, got injured, injured the suspect's and they even had the termidity to tell Chuck Olmstead that we shut use our clubs instead. Let me reiterateWTF???

Maybe it's just me, but it seems that a tickle fight is the only kind of "hand to hand" technique Mr. Aldridge is trained in.

Issac Bass was no stranger to the Police or to violence. He has tried to kill Officers and disarm Officers and has fought with them every time. Now the ACLU says that several hundred deaths across the nation out of almost 100,000 deployments is reason not to use them. They are so full of poop. I guess in those 100k deployments we really should have used our guns and there would be 100k less thugs on the street.

I like the way Chuck Olmstead ridiculed the little twerp from the ACLU. I can't believe he said we shouldn't use them that we should use our "Billy Clubs" instead. Obviously the moron hasn't read state law and that "Billy Clubs" are considered deadly weapons. Why not just use our gund then stupid??

Obviously the tazer had nothing to do with this. This savage beast told his brother earlier in the day that he was going to kill himself and that's exactly what he did. I think that the Justice system is to blame.

Maybe someone should ask the parole board why they let him out in less than 2 years of a 7 year sentence(04-CR-002653) which was enhanced by a PFO2 charge? Maybe someone else should ask his Probation Officer, whichever one of those hard chargers he was assigned to, why he had been arrested twice this year and absolutely nothing was done about it, no motions to revoked had been filed, etc. Or why he has an active warrant for Flagrant Non Support (08-F-700482), or maybe better yet why it was issued after he died.

Face it.........the issue is not that a man died after being tazed....The issue is that it was a BLACK man and WHITE officers. News media loves this kind of story. If it had been a white guy would it be a big deal???? NO

What a JOKE! Lets face it, if they gave us water guns (near future), we would at some point injure a SUSPECT, and be criticized for using excessive force! Michael Aldridge of the ACLU, GET A CLUE! Our ASP (AKA: Extend-able Baton) is not called a "Billie Bat", those were used in the 1970's, idiot!

Every time something like this happens, the police end up having to defend themselves for their actions. And, everytime something like this happens the FOP leadership is mute. I would think that a good FOP President would respond in a assertive manner to some of these moronic statements by the public.

You havent't had a FOP President with any ----'s since Rick McCubbin.

If anyone saw the video on WHAS yeasterday, the ACLU said we are trained in hand to hand combat and we could have used "billy clubs" instead of taser, then Chuck Olmsted said that is the reason you LMPD went to taser because of the complaints about excessive force with "billy clubs"

Pretty sad how a human being can intoxicate oneself, do drugs, then get violent with family or anyone. Then blame his own actions on the drugs WHICH HE JUST TOOK - (or in this case took all day). Im no rocket scientist but wouldnt the solution be to stop the drug use all together. I would beleive it is safe to say that if I was an addict in a lifestyle of harming and stealing from family and others because of my addiction. I should go to EVERY MEASURE to get clean. So many programs and help out there. If I didnt seek the help I need to get clean I would say this is selfishness.
