I am not a LMPD officer and don't even live near Louisville. However, I do sympathize with the officers. I am only guessing that these officers are not highly paid employees and did not choose to become police officers in hopes of getting rich. These guys took the job at hand for the satisfaction, benefits and prestige of being a police officer. To take a $60 fee for them to take home their units is a slap in the face to them and their families. This act alone will deter potential police officers from applying with your police department. Let me ask the Mayor and maybe even some of his staff. Do you have allowances for cars that you use? If you are like most cities, the answer would be "yes". I am also sure that your wages are a bit higher then the officers who take risk on every traffic stop and call they answer. Mayor, city counsel or whoever plans to charge these officers for take home units needs to back your officers. You will get much respect from them if you do that and maybe even re-elected.

I am a Metro Police Officer, it's with much disgust that once again our "Wonderful Mayor" is trying to use the most valuable tool a city can have, it's Emergency Service Personnel, to cover his lack of money management. The only person that the citizens of Metro Louisville can fault for the deficit is the Mayor himself! Who has been in charge since the merged government? I'll answer that, Mayor Jerry Abramson! In any business the number one man or woman has the "Responsibility" of budgeting the business, if it falls into the negative the only person to blame is the number one man or woman! Chad Carlton how is it the "responsibility" of the police of your community to pick up the tab for the lack of money management by your boss? Mr. Mayor, I would fire Chad Carlton, his ludicrous statement makes you and the city of Louisville look bad! To the citizens of Metro Louisville, if you don't already know, under Mayor Abramson the City of Louisville was broke, the County had money in the bank, now both the former County and City are broke, under who? You guessed it, "Wonderful" Mayor Jerry Abramson! You do the math since Mayor Jerry Abramson obviously is having trouble with his elementary budget, if you don't have it, don't spend it, Duh! Chief White, since you obviously have no insight on what your Officers feel, let me help you, we don't approve of the City of Louisville taking $60 more dollars out of our pocket. I ask you Chief White, would it be "OK" to take $60 dollars from you? Furthermore Chief White, you now have a recruitment department, something that didn't exist before your appointment, we always had more than enough applicants for less available positions. You need to develop a retention department to retain not only the experienced police officers that retire on the day they get 20 years in the system but also the new recruits and Officers you are driving away from your department.

Here is the issue: The Mayor spends hundreds thousands of dollars on "beautifing" our city with granite squares and flowers at the cost of taxpayers??? (look at Cannon's Lane by Hwy 64) and what is that doing for the city how many lives has it saved??? But yet he continue to ask the LMPD for money. What about their contract where are the raises the current contract is not keeping up with inflation no where close. How much will it cost the city to implement this $60.00 per take home vehicle? Who is keeping up with the paperwork who is working when and how much is it fair for the guy that works 4 days a month vs the guy who works 20. The real quesiton is why are they working off duty?? We should all know that by now Money or lack of it at their regular jobs. How many people do you know that work 40 hours a week at a high stress people related job that just want to go out and get a second job for the fun of it just love working? Seems to me just another way to try and get under the officers skin. The Mayor needs to look at his own transportation maybe he and Cheif White should car pool or catch the TARC or pay out of there pocket for the perks of their jobs (I am sure a few budget cuts there would help too). Police use their cars off duty because the community hires them as a service for protection. Hired them because they are police with a police car. The jobs that these men and women take on is not for enjoyment they have to make extra money somewhere cause we all know they are not getting paid what they should. This stuff will continue as long as Jerry is in and White keep going along. Thank you all police fire and rescue for the great job even under such conditions I feel for you all well the ones that are working and trying to make a difference not all you yesmen or compnay people that need to stick with your fellow workers need to be on their side you know what is right and fair and what is going on is not it is so onesided.

YOU ALL KNOW THAT COUNCILMAN DOUG HAWKINS CAME AND SPOKE AT THE LAST FOP MEETING. HE HAS OFFERED TO HELP THE FOP AND GATHER SUPPORT OF OTHER COUNCIL MEMBERS. ALL THE FOP HAS TO DO IS SAY THE WORD. OF COURSE HE HAS HEARD NOTHING BUT CRICKETS. WE CANNOT DO IT ON OUR OWN. JERRY DOESN'T CARE WHAT WE DO. WE NEED TO USE HIS SUPPORT TO SHOW THE PUBLIC HOW JERRY ACTS. HE IS WILLING TO HELP US AND I WOULD HOPE THAT WE DO NOT TURN OUR BACK ON HIM WHEN HE IS THE ONE TRYING TO STEP UP AND HELP.

FROM WHAT I'M HEARING THE OFFER MAYOR JERRY IS MAKING IS RIDICULOUS. I HEAR THE INCREASES IN INSURANCE IS WAAAYYYY HIGHER THAT THE MEASLY 3.5, 2, 2, 2. IF THIS IS THE OFFER THEN WE WOULD BE FOOLS TO VOTE YES. THIS IS ANOTHER SLAP IN THE FACE TO US. I WOULD HOPE WE ARE SMARTER THAN ACCEPTING THIS GARBAGE AS A CONTRACT. BUT THEN AGAIN...LOOK AT THE LAST CONRACT WE VOTED IN......RIDICULOUS!!!!

Carlton says a police officer having a take-home car is "Not a right or a privilege." In fact, Carlton says the charge for officers who work off duty jobs was in an effort to save the entire take-home car policy.

"Somebody's got to bear that responsibility. If it's not the officer who's using that for a second job, it's going to be our taxpayers," said Carlton.

You arrogant SOB! Somebody's got to bear the responsibility? How about the people that got us into this deficit crunch, starting with jerry abramson. The Police take home car program has nothing to do with the overspending by metro Government.

CUT BACK THE NUMBER OF MAJORS SITTING IN THE CHIEFS OFFICE.CUT ALL THE EX REPORTERS WHO SERVE AS PRESS PEOPLE, CAN'T A COMMANDING OFFICER ON SCENE DO THIS JOB FOR FAR LESS.

I was most excited when I heard John Yarmuth is coming to speak. I will have to came out because the way the FOP is now, it will be standing room only. They will probably endorse OBAMA FOR PRESIDENT OR EVEN WORSE HILLARY!!!!!!!!

This is a little off the subject, however it still deals with money. Does anybody know why there are FOP lodges and members of the Sheriff's council lobbying against the State Police, KVE, and Fish and Wildlife from being accepted permanently into the KLEMPF fund. Does the RCFOP support or disprove this and why?

I can't believe people get on this website and bash the mayor and chief. When recently I have heard of ONE Particular Police Officer that is not in PSU taking it upon himself to conduct his own investigations on officers taking there cars out of county. If this officer was as worried about locking up real criminals, and bad guys than what other officers are doing, he might be something someday other than a SNITCH. But that is what the department, I geuss as come to, if you can't make a name for yourself by doing real police work you resort to following police around. I hope they give you a good field promotion. I just want to warn eveyone there are SNITCHES afoot and I geuss there always will be. Quit crying about the mayor and the chief and do some house cleaning of our own. The sad thing is they think no one knows who they are, and they hide behind a badge and a gun there whole career, and do nothing but take up space. SNITCH.

Great job reporting on the issue WAVE News!! It is the first time I have seen a local news station catch a metro spinner in a lie and prove them wrong on prime time news!! We can't protect you if you don't protect us!!!

This is a letter I wrote the Mayor, I think every citizen should flod the Mayors emails with complaints over this "fee" he is considering:

Dear Mayor,

Let me begin by saying I think you are a great mayor, I voted for you this past election, and will continue to do so, over time I have not always agreed with what you were doing, you did what you thought best at the time for the city, this decision about making officers pay to use their cruisers off duty, is in my opinion, A BIG MISTAKE, by allowing officer to use their cruiser "fee" free..it puts more of a "police presence" on the streets, if an officer is made to pay for his cruiser off duty, as soon as he goes 10-7, if he comes across an accident, someone broke down, in distress, or driving dangerously or reckless, if he is "off duty" he would be less inclined to stop or call it in, as opposed to having access to his car 24-7 he would not have to "think" about his decision, and if he is "off duty" the most he might do is call in an accident, someone broke down, in distress, or driving dangerously or reckless instread of taking the appropriate action immediately, I hope you reconsider this "fee" you are proposing, and continue to let the officer of LMPD use their cruiser 24-7, whether they are off or on the clock.

WHAT A MISTAKE FOR THE NEW F.O.P. PRESIDENT TO TAKE A STAND ON THE POLICY FOR TAKE HOME CARS USED OFF DUTY. TAKE HOME CARS HAVE NEVER BEEN PART OF THE CONTRACT FOR MANY REASONS. NOW YOU JUST MAY GET WHAT YOU ASKED FOR. A REDUCTION IN PAY FOR THIER USE AND YOU CAN PAY TAXES ON THEM LIKE EVERY ONE ELSE WHO HAS A CAR AS A BENIFIT.

HE HAS SURLEY NOT MADE A MOVE THAT WILL GENERATE PUBLIC SUPPORT NOR HAS HE CREATED A POSITION WHERE THE CITIZENS OF LOUISVILLE WILL SUPPORT THE POLICE UNION WHEN IT COMES TO THE NEXT CONTRACT.

EACH OFFICER IS LUCKY THE TAKE HOME CAR PROGRAM CONTINUES TO EXISTS WITH RISING COST. BEFORE IT'S OVER SEE IF METTRO GOV. DOESN'T MALE THE MOVE TO EITHER NO TAKE HOME CARS OR A NEW POLICY THAT TAKE HOME CARS PAID FOR BY TAXES CAN NOT BE USED FOR ANY OTHER USE EXCEPT TO AND FROM WORK ONLY AND NOT ALLOWED TO BE USED FOR ANY OFF DUTY WORK. GREAT JOB F.O.P. PRESIDENT.

SOUNDS LIKE TIME FOR THE OFFICERS OF METRO POLICE 614 LOOK FOR A NEW PRESIDENT

AND FIND ONE THAT HAS THIER BEST INTEREST IN MIND.

my question is WHERE IS THE LMPD FOUNDATION to help us with our needs? They were created to help the department in financial areas and with items that the department needs but could not afford. I am not talking about the $60.00 but with the selling off of our assetts to help the general budget. Personally I think that they were created to give the chief extra money for his pet projects and help certain people get prized jobs.

It is apples to apples.....Metro Population has nothing to do with. Louisvilles pop does increase during the the day. There are several other Police agancies inside Columbus, Like the Franklin County Sheriff, Grandview Heights, Village of Greenhills, Beachwood, Gahanna, Parkersburg, Westerville Police.....

People like you are the reason why LMPD is light years, salaries, and authorized strengths behind EVERYONE. Police Dept don't base budgets and authorized strenghts on Metro Populations. No matter how you look at it LOUISVILLE IS AND ALWAYS WILL BE BEHIND BECAUSE OF YOU!

There is an old saying that goes something like- "fight fire with fire". Money makes jerry tick, stats make Robert White and the boys happy. How about getting into someone elses pocket and show the chief just who is really in charge. Here are some things that could be done , BUT, everyone has to be in agreement to do it. 1) All officers should stop all self initiated activities ,putting a stop to this very wrong quota system. Then the majors might begin to realize that WE are the ones they should support, that they need US to make THEM a success. This also has side effects. The lawyers who make a very good living off of what we do would start to complain because it would get them in their pocket. Not to mention the court fees that would be lost, the jail fee lost, and so on. Can you imagine how much worse the crime rate would be if officers just made their runs, and nothing else? 2) as far as the take home cars go-park them, either in your drive way or at the districts. No off duty work with them, no driving them off duty.Think about the police presence that would not be seen by the public, the stranded motorists that would not be helped, the actions taken by off duty officers that on duty guys could disregard. 3) No off duty work would eventually present a problem. Officers would be detailed for things that off duty would have taken care of, meaning less officers on the street, meaning less stats, meanig more crime. That also means officers tied up making runs to places that off duty had a police presence at, and other things I dont have enough time to mention. 4) How deep into jerrys pocket could we get if we all took one sick day a week? We have unlimited sick time, start using it. You all know how to do it with out violating the contract and avoiding a doctors note. How many of you have came on in to work when you should have stayed home? When you feel bad stay home. See how that adds up.5) Stop making runs by yourselves. Let the runs pile up, sooner or later people will complain and - what can they do about it? What can they really MAKE us do? 6) Let me stress this -MAKE YOUR RUNS AND DO WHAT YOU ARE REQUIED TO DO BY LAW, nothing more or less. Get the idea? I could go on with more but my point is the police dont realize just how much power they have. Bottom line is this -every cop knows that sometimes to get a bad guy into cuffs you have to fight dirty. Enough said.

Can we get a listing of all the Metro employees who have a take home car posted here??

My MARKED, SHIELDED take home car goes from work to home, with MAYBE 1 or 2 off duty jobs a month. -Well, no more off duty now- it's not worth it! I'll bet the other Metro employees with UNMARKED, UNSHIELDED, Explorers, Five Hundreds, etc with leather interior and sunroofs get driven 10 TIMES the amount 'off duty' than my crown vic does!!! I don't take my family in it ANYWHERE! -You know those guys with the 'normal' cars are using it as a regular , everyday drive everywhere car! Why should I pay $60 a month for the privilidge to earn $120 and give half of it to jerry when he and others are burning 10 TIMES the amount of gas I AM A MONTH????

Since WAVE 3 did their story on the AIR Unit, they mentioned

Columbus,

OH Police having 7 Helicopters. They are as close to Population as

Louisville as possible, and another city with DOUBLE the Police budget as

Louisville. They have 100 million Dollars more in their budget than

Louisville. 600 more Sworn officers and their health insurance is nearly identical to LMPD!!!!!!!! Oh yeah, they make $15,000 plus a year more than us.

Columbus BUSINESS AND PERSONNEL BUREAU

The Business and Personnel (B P) Bureau administered the Division?s $229.6 million budget, of which approximately $208.9 million was expended on personnel costs. The Division of Police was also awarded $1,015,922 in outside funding from grants and agreements. The Business Personnel Bureau consists of the Business Administration Section, the Personnel Administration Section, and the Property Management Section.

Population

Columbus 768,804.... Sworn 1,822.........

Health Insurance

The health insurance plan covers the officer and family and is provided at a cost of $27.45 per month for single coverage and $71.40 for family coverage.

$26.43 / hr. with 4 years service? Hummm I have double that time of service and my hourly rate is $21 an hour

March 8th, 2008 @ 4:32PM (17 years ago)

The basic problem with comparing the City of Columbus budgets and population with Louisville is the same problem we would have with comparing us to St. Louis. St. Louis has a city population of about 350K, but obviously, the reality is, during the workday, they are MUCH larger, with a MSA of about 3 million. Same for Columbus - I've got a buddy that polices in one of the suburban agencies. Columbus has a population of around 710K, but the MSA is 1.7 million. In comparison, we are at about 1.2 million for our MSA. Police density isn't just based upon resident population, but upon transient, worker population, and that, I'm told, is where we are different. We may move people around the county, but the population of the county overall doesn't change dramatatically from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. - as St. Louis and Columbus do, for example.

Last time I checked, by the way, St. Louis has about 1700 officers - who, I'll note, are legally required to live inside the City of St. Louis. (And yeah, they check.) I'll check on Columbus.

Do people not consider police officers tax payers?? I will gladly share the brunt of Jerry's overspending or even overcalculating (since his deputy mayor has never been able to articulate where the NINE million dollar budget comes from compared tot he TWO million metro council calculated). But we have to pay taxes AND 60.00 a month for the use of a take home car to work a second job to supplement our salary that has not been raised in several years. Hmmmmm. What is it that Jerry has against the police?

Everyone able to attend the next Metro Council meeting on Thursday @ 6:00PM should be there. Anyone with 20 years on should definitely be there to speak their mind or else you can quit posting on this board like a bunch of grafitti taggers.

Just had an idea ...

Let's all take turns - this month (March) - you do a bunch of off duty and pay for the car. Next month, you tell them you aren't working ANY off duty, pull back all your slips - and I'll take all the offduty and pay for the car - and we just flip flop. That'll drive 'em nuts on paperwork. Can't charge for the car if you aren't working offduty, right?

You might want to get your facts straight. First, it is KLEPF fund. Second, the fund is not a tax on homeowners insurance but car insurance. Third, the agency you are proud to be a member of has fought for years to stay out of KLEPF. They would get the pay in the form of raises every year instead of joining KLEPF. But, now that there is no money in state government the KLEPF fund is the easiest way for you to get a raise. Once again, the State Police "I'm better than everyone else" mentality is showing through even though you are now the 2ND biggest police agency in the state. I am all for you joining KLEPF and getting the money but you yourself have stated that you don't want to abide by the law and the law states that to join KLEPF you must abide by the Police Officer's Bill of Rights. I don't want you weakening my rights as an officer just because your agency feels its above those fought for rights.

WOW! You guys can't get along with one another. You fight about city and county. You fight about rookie and veteran. You call each other names and then scratch your head when we can't unite. Stop posting all your gripes in a publically-accessed forum and go to the FOP and unite there. Stop airing dirty laundry. Until we come together, we'll never be strong enough to do anything. If you don't think the mayor has people reading this in order to keep a pulse on our attitudes, your sorely mistaken. If I was the mayor, I wouldn'y worry about giving a group of people that grip and name call amongst themselves any credibility or even consider them a threat. I am not a police officer but know people who are police officers in Louisville. Their jobs are extremely dangerous. I have tremendous respect for them and the jobs they do. They put their lives on the line every day. Many of the them have degrees and could make more money doing something else, less dangerous with better work hours. They stay in the job because it is what they love to do. The police do not make enough money today. Why consider taking money away from the people that keep us safe, regardless of the amount. On a policemans salary, $60 per month is a lot of money. Find it another way. Leave the police alone.

The cops need to stop whining. They get a free car to drive around that tax payers are paying for anyway. And they drive the taxpayers car to another job and dont want to pay for it? They want to eat their cake and have it at the same time. STOP WHINING COPS
