Well, its good to see that Metro Government has come up with new ways to save money and decrease crime- all at the same time! Where are these morons coming from! I guess the solution is, don't call the police if a crime involves a juvenile, and if the police do respond, maybe they should just whip the hell out of them. That way, at least there would be some incentive to not WANT to get caught. Jerry come up with something! Help our citizens.........never mind.

I myself am 16, therefore this "loophole" applies to me, and I can tell you that the main reason some of my "less inteligent" peers do most of the things they do because they believe that they will not be punished for what they do. I know that several of these people have recieved this "catch and release treatment" and after this they continue their illegal and delinquient behavior. I believe that there should be stricter consequences for crimes done by minors than there is now so hopefully they can be detered from continuing crime in the future as an adult and as a minor. I see so many people wasting their talent by doing drugs, joining gangs, and generally not caring about what is right, what is wrong, and in turn passing these ideals onto their younger siblings. I volunteer at a Louisville YMCA and I was on a day trip with a group of young kids, when our bus passed a LMPD cruiser and a 5 year old told me, "Oh no, theres the police, they're going to shoot me! I hate the police." A 5 year old told me this! Later I asked him why he thought this and he said that his older brother told him that the cops are always out to get you. Its this corrupting of a pure, young childs mind that makes me sick and something needs to be done to deter Juvenile crime and hopefully rid this mentality of police that has exploded over the past 10 years.

I would venture to guess that if there is some grant money involved that it is another attempt by the Abramson administration to accept money to do nothing. The list for these type grants/studies is long and distinguished but every one of them ends up hindering law enforcement rather than serving the public. We waste so many tax dollars on programs and studies to find out that it still takes putting a scumbag in jail to keep him from committing crimes..at least for the period of time he is incarcerated.

I can't believe that anyone that has ever been victimized by a "child" would have anything possitive to say about this latest governmental foul-up.

Mandatory Arrest

Actually - state law does NOT require a DV arrest - it is strongly preferred, but it is NOT required - read the statute.

Boy...that is another good way to keep officers off the street. "Sorry radio, I can't that robbery-assault in progress because I am on the phone trying to reach my 10-15's momma, dad, sister, brother, aunt, uncle, grandma, grandpa......oh yeah they didn't care where he was when he was committing the crime but now they will certainly stop what they were doing to come and get him and make sure he shows up for court"

Before you all go flying off the handle trying to blame someone you need to remember that this is the same policy followed by the rest of the state.

The "system" has always, for at least for as long as I can remember, left the Police to babysit and raise these thugs. The procedures are written in a way that relieves the burden from the parents, youth detention, CDW, the Courts, the Judges, and the lawyers...who does that leave? Unfortunately, there will be no change coming...the system is an absolute joke!! Kuddos to the drug dealers, burglars, and robbers who "employ" juveniles to hold their dope, break into houses and businesses, and steal from you and I...you have to admit it's a pretty good plan. I work in another County but the system is universal...a slap on the wrist is all they will get, if that much. I have all these little S %TBAGS 18th birthday marked on my calendar to reward them for their protected activities with as many trips to jail as possible...the Preparation-H is on me. Stay safe

The adult system isn't that much better. The one advantage is that they will almost always be accepted at the adult detentions center (sometimes we have a little difficulty with injuries, but it's not that bad). But no matter what they did they are right out in a day or two (and I'm not exagerating about it when I say any charge. I've locked up for Robbery, Burglary, TICS, stolen cars, etc., etc. all with guys with long records of those charges AND numerous FTAs and they RORed within a day or two, 3 days max).

And what's the deal with charges being dismissed so easily??!?!?!? I worked in another state before in a bigger jurisdiction with courts every bit as a busy and I've never seen anything like this. Chech some thugs courtnet record and you will see 90% of charges dismissed, really for no reason.... all you have to do is tell the PD or hired attorney "no".... you want a hearing??? fine. Officers here, your clients here, let's do it right now..... if not, ONE continuance to get a witness here or whatever excuse you had for needing a continuance....

I know, I'm dreaming......

Paul, you are right on the point with this one. I know of a 4th Division officer who dropped off a couple of lil' thugs at the safe place. When she left, the employees were very upset that she only gave them a copy of the citation and kept the original to turn into the courts. The lil' thugs took the copies from the employee and tore the up before leaving the building. The CDW called the officer and asked if she had their information and told the officer why. NOTHING has happened to the thugs for their actions. Why do we even attemt to arrest them when no one in the system wants to take them. LMYDC will also ask the child in a very coaxing way if they had anything to drink or any drugs. If the child says yes, they refuse them back to the officer. NO PBT or any thing else, just on their word so they LMYDC doesn't have to deal with them. Once a thug leaves safe house they also want to file a missing person report on them. Nice way to tie up the officers on the street.

I feel like someone has been taking too many crazy pills again! Just when you think that it can't get any worse, it does. This makes my head spin. Dropping criminals off at a safe place with other troubled teens??? AND they can leave whenever they want too??? This is the most absurd thing I have ever heard of! Why hasn't the department done something about it? I can see that the crime stat meetings are going to be getting more interesting when the juvenile crime skyrockets in Louisville. Way to go LMYDC!

Let me get this straight, with all the crime going on the police are not allowed to arrest juveniles in most cases? What a load of crap. My neighbors are going to be thrilled to hear about this. So if the bully down the block beats up all the other kids and is still hitting them when the police show up they will just be able to turn him over to his parents instead of taking his little butt to jail? This is insane. This is very sad. Thanks for bringing this to the attention of the community. Funny how we never saw this in the paper or on television.

Heard juveniles that do not have felonies are released from the

May 30th, 2007 @ 12:21PM (17 years ago)

I heard juveniles are released from the detention center anyway if it is not a felony, which also puts the juvenile back on the streets. That is the same as YMCA. YMCA provides counseling services along with other detailed services whereas the detention does not. AND just because a juvenile is released does not mean the juvenile is going to get away without being charged or held accountable. I was also told by the CDW office that ALL charges turned in by police officer are processed whether the juvenile was arrested are not !!!
