High-tech device would alert police when shots are fired

March 29th, 2007 @ 3:06PM (17 years ago)

This system will be a waste of money to us. All it is is a feel good item that they can say they put in place to help protect the community. There are not enough police officers on the street now to get to all the runs that are holding. Just look at the stats and calls for service in the 1st, 2nd and 4th Divisions. Those officers are busting their ***** to get to runs with no breaks. Metro Goverment paid how much money for cameras that look over high crime areas. Problem is there is no one to staff the cameras all day. They will be great witness' if something goes wrong, but not for something going on right now. The dispatchers will be overloaded on trying to get the cars to dispatch to. This is how it is going to sound....I need a car in ***(insert # here) Division to clear to copy a shots fired run........any car in the division that can copy a shots fired run.......Sgt, are you OK that we have no cars for a shots fired run?

Idea....how about taking that money and putting it to getting more police officers on the street to take care of the problems before they become shots fired runs?

You really must be kidding! EVERYTIME a shot is fired? Already short of officers, now we're chasing a new form of a "911 hang-up from a payphone" that must always be investigated. Furthermore, thanks to the media, now every jack-leg in the city that lacks for some cheap entertainment will step outside and fire off a weapon. Hope that bullitt finds a hard roof top and not a child on the way down! Good job encouraging more stupidity!

If a shot is fired, and a cop isn't there to witness it, did it

Cause most of the people are like "I didn't see nothing!!!"

Good grief, the 2nd division wouldn't be able to make any other

They'd be going from shots fired run to the next with no break.

You guys in the West will be responding to shots fired calls every few hours.

What a waste of money. It cost 400,000 to cover two city blocks. That money would be better spent on paying the police who actually have to respond to the calls.

I like the idea. We don't need to have the community involved at all! We've tought them that we'll monitor their areas and they don't have to be responsible or have ovnership or anything. Uncle Jerry continually cries poormouth and as the FOP is set to begin negotiations for a new contract I'm sure he will say once again that the City has no money but they can waste it on crap like this.
