A taser will not be a smart idea in deadly force confrontations until it is capable of:

1) firing as many shots as a handgun

2) being as reliable as a handgun

3) having the same effective range as a handgun

Taser technology is nowhere close to being a replacement for a handgun in terms of firepower, range, and reliability. Until it is, I'm not getting myself killed attempting to use a taser in a deadly force situation.

Good luck getting any results out of your letter. I haven't agreed with a lot that Chief White has done, but I think this is one time when he'll actually stand up for officer safety. Tasers will almost certainly continue to get used just as they are right now.

If someone is trying to kill you, why on earth would you choose to use a taser instead of a handgun.? That person obviously doesn't care if you live, so why should you care about him? The Police are mandated to WIN. You're not seeing the big picture. We can't lose. What happens then?

All of these controversial situations have one thing in common. They could have all been avoided if the "victim/criminal" had made a decision to stop a life of crime and to obey the law.

"just as Amnesty International and the ACLU have been demanding"

That statement right there tells me all I need to know about you and your knowledge of Police work.

I wonder if you read the part about excited delirium. Do you even understand what it is and how it affects the mental and physical state of a suspect? Obviously not, accordin to medical research on it even patients seen by ambulance crews die from excited delirium close to 22% of the time. People with this condition exhibit paranoid behavior, supehuman strength and elevatedbody temperatures at or greater than 103. Hello what do you expect these officers to do? Give another option that is safer for both police officers and the public at large. Educating officers and the public on what Excited Delirium is as well as how fatal it is without immediate medical treatment is the best option at this time.
