Rest in peace brother

Kentucky Trooper Killed in Collision

December 21st, 2006 @ 12:56PM (17 years ago)

They've already reported that he pulled out in front of the guy that hit him, was apparently not going code, and Leonard was not wearing his seat belt. That stretch of road is dangerous in the best of circumstances.

Come on guys, DRIVE SMART.

I've heard several cops say that they can't wear their seat belts because they "might" have to get out in a hurry. A co-worker of mine, a retired cop of thirty years, mentioned that in all his time, he could count on one hand the number of times he wanted (not needed) to bail out fast, but he drove, and encountered stupid drivers, every day. Do the math - wear your seat belt. (And remember, come January 1, failure to do so is a primary offense, something you can pull over someone else for ....)

For that matter, I've seen any number of cops with young children riding in the front seat - some small enough that they should have been in a child passenger safety seat - there is NO EXCUSE for that. If you have to transport a child, surely every division can afford a seat, or call social services to transport. And if it is your own child, shame on you for setting such a horrible example.

Ok, I might be wrong here, but a Kentucky State Trooper has died and we are on here ******** about seat belts? I'm pro-police, but I know that everybody makes mistakes, some more than others, but lets not forget that a family has lost someone so close to Christmas (the holiday season for your PC people). Policy, law or whatever he may have done wrong should be secondary right now. I know we have to learn from our mistakes, but lets take time out to thank Trooper Leonard and all other law enforcement officers for putting their life on the line and pray for them.

For the record, I knew Trooper Leonard, a fine young man and a loss to his family and to KSP, but if we don't drive home the point now - it'll be forgotten next week. WEAR YOUR SEAT BELT - it can save your life. No excuses. If it doesn't fit, and it can be a problem with all the gear, get an extender, but wear it.

Our gray family has lost a youngster and I am sure that he will be dearly missed by family, friends, and the community for which he served. But let us not mourn his death, but instead celebrate his life. He may have served for only 3 short years but I am certain that he touched many different peoples lives in many different ways. In many ways police officers everywhere are like "fathers" in our society. A lot of people think of us as hard hearted, non-caring, egotistical, power hungry bullies. Nothing could be farther from the truth for the majority of law enforcement officers. In fact, for most, we care more than most and our hearts ache when we come home to our home and try to unwind after spending the day facing some of the worst that society has to offer day after day. I have been in law enforcement or government service for all of my adult life and have seen things that I could have lived several life times without seeing, but it was, and is, the path I chose and would do it all over again. It makes me proud to see the young officers, filled with spit and vinager, come out of our, or any other academy, ready to take on the world of evil (for those of you who don't believe in evil you need to read the article of the SHEEPDOG or the SHEEP) like a sheepdog protecting his flock. The life of a law enforcement officer is like a double edge sword. When people need us there, we should have been there yesterday. However, if we are there and it is effecting you or your family then we should be spending our time fighting "real crime" somewhere else. When most are celebrating the holidays, law enforcement are the ones away from there loved ones trying to make sure that strangers get to there final destinations to celebrate with their loved ones. When they don't, we are the ones that has to deliver that horrible message and try to comfort them after delivering that message. Then you go home and try to celebrate with your family and thank "God" for what you do have while at the same time your heart aches for what others have lost. Trooper Leonard's passing is tragic and again he will be sorely missed by many, but he will be forever remembered by all whose lives he touch in whatever manner. We all make mistakes everyday, many of those we think never affects anyone, but every decision you make about everything has some effect on something or someone forever.

REST IN PEACE MY GRAY BROTHER, ALTHOUGH I NEVER MET YOU AND MANY OTHERS THAT HAVE GONE BEFORE YOU, I WILL STILL SHED A SILENT TEAR, NOT FOR YOU FOR YOU HAVE MOVED ON TO A BETTER BEAT BUT FOR THE ONES WHO DO NOT UNDERSTAND.

To your family may God offer comfort and help them to celebrate your life, for your time on earth was not wasted! Amen
