Police Officers Are Not Allowed To Have Personal Lives

August 8th, 2006 @ 10:57AM (18 years ago)

Personal lives - yes - identifying yourself as a cop with a specific agency AND wearing an identifiable agency uniform - NO - (Supreme Court says so).

But ... if it was this officer (and not someone playing a joke on him, which is possible) - why did the city release any document with BIRTHDATES on it? They do NOT have to release that information under Open Records.

I was on my way home from my patrol shift today when the DJ at 93.1 the Fox was talking about this news article. He allowed several people to call in and go on the air to comment about it. Everyone agreed that it was probably just a prank that was played on this officer by someone else. The DJ also commented on how the Courier Journal looks for any possible chance to embarrass a cop.

The article was irresponsible. Chris is a good guy and like the story says he will be labeled with this for the rest of his career. The author is Jessie Halladay, usually a pretty fair reporter, but she's really crossed the line here.

Channel 3 has picked up on it. This is what they said.

"Though the officer is not committing a crime by posting a personal ad, no matter how obscene, he could be violating his oath.

Major Lisa Rudzinski of the Kentucky State Police says, "The standards of conduct are designed to protect behavior on and off duty in a variety of areas."

Major Rudzinski can't speak for the Louisville Metro Police, but KSP's code of ethics is similar.

"If we don't live by those standards, it could jeopardize the reputation of the department, the reputation of the officer and their credibility and it ultimately could affect their work."

WAVE 3 was able to find the Louisville Metro Police Code of Ethics which states, "I will keep my private life unsullied as an example to all and will behave in a manner that does not bring discredit to me or the agency."

They were careful to say that he didnt break the law, but instead suggested he is violating his oath of office.

The "code of ethics" has a million entries that no person could completely live by. Speeding is against the code of ethics, and if they wanted to this administration will nail your butt to the wall on it.

I agree. It was a lame comment. Just like the lame "HEY LOOK AT ME" Website the FOP now has. This site is the bomb. There is always interesting articles and comments.

The FOP site has turned into a political site for Kelly Downard. Don't get me wrong, I want Kelly to win in the worst kind of way, but I come to this site for the news and comments and to find out what is going on.

It looks like the last news article on rcfop was published in May. Hello Mr. President it is 2006..we are in the information age....not the stone age.... keep your people informed. I can't go to meetings. I never know what is going on. Occadionally I get some e-mails, but geezze!

The Courier-Journal? Haven't read it in years. Thank you Al Gore for inventing the internet, so I can get my news from elsewhere.

This FOP president is all about being buddies with the admin.. So far he has shown that he stands for nothing other than his own rear end. How about a new president and a new attorney for the next contract. No more back door meetings with the city and then we are told what a great deal we are getting. If you thought the good old boy system was in effect in previous administrations this one is 100 times worse. If you are "IN" with this chief you are sure to get that certain job or that certain promotion. No matter if you lie, destroy city property, don't show up for work, or can't even read or write properly you are sure to be the pick. In the past, this place had been known for having a couple of great police departments.....today it is just a sad excuse.

Food for thought....Keeling is in the band Caribou along with Paul Barth (McMahan Fire Chief) who is the mayors liason to the county fire service. Barth campaigned heavily for Jerry and has always been a big democrat...just food thought.

One thing has nothing to do with the other. Just because he may or may not have placed the add has nothing to do with how he works as an officer. I know him personally and he is as good a Police Officer as anyone I know.

Everyone is allowed to live their life as they please. Is he breaking the law? No, so the newspapers to keep their opinions, and comments to themselves. Let's dig up some personal facts on some of them, and see if they like it!
