Logical remedy

December 7th, 2005 @ 8:26AM (18 years ago)

I'd offer the logical remedy, but every time I do, I'm told that it is "impossible." It would not be a difficult at all matter to create a rotating process of hiring new recruits, sending them to Richmond for the mandated training, maybe ten at a time, bring them back to Louisville for Louisville-specific training, and put them out on the street with an FTO. At any given time, you would have new recruits in three phases of training, and you could layer in Kentucky laterals with the Kentucky-specific class and a shortened FTO period. Add an additional, maybe twice yearly, if appropriate, lateral class for officers who come from out of state, and who need Kentucky law, and take advantage of the already in place state process for hiring such out of state laterals - what do you think other agencies who hire folks from California, Massachusetts, Florida, etc. do? If you time it well, you could have a flow of new officers coming into the agency year around. That would keep the existing training department busy all year, both with basic and laterals.

It seems obvious that the existing system is not going to be able to keep up with the need, which is only going to get more dire in the next few years. There are a lot of officers that are 18 plus, and most are planning to retire at 20, what is the game plan for this? (Not to mention officers who bought time from other services, they are the surprise factor!)
