I don't have a big problem with speeding up Recruit class'. Going 26 weeks is CRAZY!! During my 20 week academy, we had so much down time and so many outsiders that wanted to come talk to us about the silliest stuff that had nothing to do with police work....Like the Seizure and diabetes Assc. and countless others. The academy Should be 16 weeks and you will and always learn how to police by riding the streets with FTO and other officers around you.

Lateral classes should be 4-6 weeks

Why do you say that? Maybe they should think about hiring Texas certified laterals? A good buddy of mine is Chief of a mid-sized Texas town (100K in population) and when some of his officers complained about hiring laterals, he pointed out that HE was a lateral - spent over 29 years as a Florida cop working his way up to chief. (And since his officers love him, they suddenly realized that lateral isn't bad - if you make good hiring choices.) And all he had to do to be Texas certified was take some classes and pass a test, which he did with no problem.

The academy has always had lots of wasted time and impractical lessons about how you should always follow whatever policy says. The problem with policy is it was written in a nice, calm, sterile environment, instead of a chaotic and dangerous environment where things don't always happen the way you expect. If you drill into recruits heads that they can do nothing if policy doesn't allow it, then you're laying the groundwork for them eventually getting themselves killed. Shorten the academy to just cover the basics and put them on the street as a third officer in a beat car to only assist for the first 10 weeks Put them into the FTO program after that. Learning by observing and doing is much more effective than listening to the Chiefs Office propaganda and other nonsense in a classroom. In-state laterals should have a 2 week orientation and some FTO time, not an academy. Sending laterals through months of academy training is needlessly wasting tax dollars and keeping the department dangerously short-staffed.
