They ask early on because they want to see if your story changes or if the evidence contradicts what you say. Everyone would like to think that it's ok to talk to someone investigating you if you're innocent, but in reality some people are motivated by desires other than simple factfinding. For example, somebody might want to just please the Chief and the Mayor so they can make Major one day. It's sometimes easier for a politician to hang an innocent police officer out to dry than it is to explain to a particular segment of the community that they're raising too many dangerous felons. The best option is to let your lawyer do all of the talking if you get in that situation.

Whooooa! Hold on there Babba Louie. Who are you? Where do you work? AND can I have some of whatever you are drinking? The City doesn't represent the Officer in a Lawsuit. The City represents the CIty's interests in a law suit. All they are concerned about is their own liability. Duty to represent does not mean duty to represent with the best attorneys out there.

Ask McKenzie Mattingly who represented him. Was it the City. Hell No! It was Steve Schroering and Mark Miller. Remember the City dumped him early on. The big (hah) legal minds at work decided that he should be fired and then convicted in court. When he won both the criminal trial and the cvil suit, Bob White was forced to eat crow.

For those of you that don't know it, McKenzie got his job back with back pay & resigned. I can't blame him. Why work for a master that has made your life hell.
