Somebody killed a policeman today, and

A piece of our country he swore to protect

I find it hard to find the words to explain this tragic event to my children, When I know that when I tell them they will ask, Why did they kill him, He was a Policeman, A good guy, and will you get shot when you go to work. The last time I made a comment to this site was shortly after 911 when so many brave officers lost there life in New York City. At that time I talked about how when we need help we sometimes call on the Police even before we call on our Lord. As a citizen of this community I am saddened and angry at what has happened. It is a senseless tragedy. The death of this upstanding officer is a reminder of how dangerous their jobs are and how crime takes its toll on so many in different ways.

My dad's cousin was a Kentucky State trooper killed in the line of duty 20+ years ago. I don't remember a lot about it but I do remember seeing the comraderie among each officer there. Otherwise strong men sobbing due to the shocking death of their bretheren is such an impressionable sight. It makes you realize although they have to be strong and alert on their jobs they are still human just like the rest of us and they do show emotion and feel the pain of loss.

My heartfelt condolences go out to Officer Grignon's family, friends and bretheren. You have suffered a huge loss that will leave a scar on your heart forever. Remember that Officer Grignon died doing what he set out to do--protect our community to the best of his ability. When I was growing up, I never saw my Dad cry until one day he walked home and burst into tears because a Brother Officer of his had been killed. I witnessed this several times more while growing up and I never quite understood until I became a Police Officer in 1988 and was was at the scene of Deputy Floyd Cheeks' murder. I was there that day and when I came home my little boy came running up to me and said Daddy I'm glad your home. I broke down and cried because I thought of another family that could not say that anymore. Yesterday all the same emotions swept over me again. I was overwhelmed with grief over a young man who lost his life in service of his country and his community while doing what he loved. A small part of each of us died yesterday.

He was simply one of family, one of "the boys", someone I never knew personally, but still cared for as I did all my dear friends. Pete will be missed greatly, on both sides of the radio, everywhere. Pete was a cop. He was fair, kind, tolerant, and respectful to everyone he came in contact with on the job and off. I will miss him deeply. I enjoyed talking to him every night at work and his smile was one that forced the people around him to smile. Pete will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

It's a shame that our juvenile judicial system is such that a person (who doesn't deserve to have his name spoken here) can walk the streets after committing so many violent crimes, and be able to kill one of the best men I knew.

It's hard for me to know that Pete was lying there on the ground, asking this piece of crap not to shoot him and his life was stolen by someone who didn't deserve to be there. This person should have never been on the street. If this doesn't cause our government to rethink it's policy on juveniles, I don't know what should.

Pete didn't give his life for the community. Pete was murdered senselessly by a low life!

It also sickens me to see people like the Justice Resource Center use my friends death to act like they care. Not a racial issue, butt out!

A great man was lost yesterday. One that will be missed forever.

Today the telephone rang with the news of the "unthinkable", advising of a fellow brother that had been shot. I was compelled to watch every news channel and listen to my portable radio. Another phone call came from my mother, who gently asked if I had heard the news? Between outburst of cries and questions of " why did this have to happen", I told her indeed I had heard and I hung on to every news anchors word. Seemed like the news anchors were taking forever to tell that Officer Grignon was going to be ok. After enough of the "a press conference will be in the next five minutes", I began to feel that the "unthinkable" had happened. The look on Chief White's face said it all. I could barely stand to listen. I was overcome with every emotion of sadness I have ever felt. No, I did not know him, personally...but does that matter? He had the same dreams, aspirations and drive that I have. He wears the same uniform, drives the same car, even the same training. And I believe that we all think and believe that we personally will make a difference in "Our" community someday. The phone calls kept coming from friends that asked me the same question, "Did you know him" ? My same response was that " that does not matter". No one wants to hear the news that an Officer has been shot, no more than hearing a family member has been shot. It's all the same to me. You see, I believe that being an Officer is a Marriage, and you inherit a family. Just like a Marriage, there are ups and downs, sometimes more of one and not enough of the other. That doesn't matter either. Because I believe it takes very special people to be Officers. My mother called me throughout the day. She works for "Our" family too...she cleans up after us Officers everyday. The last time I spoke with her today, she was leaving from 768 Barret Ave. When she called me she was in hysterics. I could not understand her, that was how hard she was crying. She could not understand why there was a Police escort for Officer Grignon's body. I explained to her, "Mom it is because he will never, ever be alone again, not for one second. He will have a partner by his side to protect him until he is forever with God." I explained to this "civilian", my Mother, how the Honor Guard works. I explained from my experience of the brief time I was on the Honor Guard and from other funerals. I told her that one of the best honors will be of "Our" Honor Guard. The dignity, respect and perfection will shine bright from "Our" Honor Guard to "Our" brother. I then told her that Officer Grignon will be an "Angel" by every Officer's side. I want everyone to know how much we should thank every Recruit Training Officer, every Field Training Officer, every Beat Partner, Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain, Major, Chief and every Officer in between that shared the healthy and productive criticism. Thanks and Blessings to the same Emergency Medical Technicians, Doctors, Evidence Technicians, and Clergy. I'm so at a loss for exactly what to say or do as so many people are. The policeman squared his shoulders and said, "No, Lord, I guess I ain't, Because those of us who carry badges can't always be a saint."

"I've had to work most Sundays, and at times my talk was rough, and sometimes I've been violent because the streets are awfully tough."

"But I never took a penny that wasn't mine to keep... Though I worked a lot of overtime when bills got just too steep."

"And I never passed a cry for help, though at times I shook with fear. And sometimes, God forgive me, I've wept unmanly tears."

I am the PROUD sister of a Metro Officer. My brother is Off. Bill Mattingly with the mounted patrol. My heart skipped several beats on Wednesday morning. I was preparing for work when I heard the news coverage of an officer being shot. I immediately had to phone to see if he was on duty, to hear that he was safe. My heart and prayers are with Off. Grignon's family. My brother stood as honor guard at today's visitation, will be at the funeral home again tomorrow, and at Monday's funeral. It is so true that the officers are all family. So, Off. Grignon too is my family. My love and prayers to all the family, especially Mrs. Grignon.

While sitting in church this evening for Good Friday mass,during the reading of the passion I found myself comparing the life of Christ with the life of our Brother Officer Peter Grignon. Christ devoted his life to saving sinners, Peter devoted his life to saving/protecting the innocent. Christ was innocent when he was crucified, Peter was innocent when he was shot. Christ was not known by all yet he died to save them. Peter was not known by all yet he died trying to protect them. Christ had his discilpes. Peter had his platoon. Even though we did not personally know Christ we still believe in him and what he did when he died for us. Even though many of us did not know Peter personally we still believe in him and know that he died for us. Christ was reserected and sits at the right hand of the Father watching over us. Peters memory will be reserected often and I'm sure he is sitting right there with the Father and Son watching over us. There were other comparisons yet I found myself hugging my sleeping son tighter as tears fell from my eyes knowing that Peter would never experience the love for his own child, yet I know he would be loved as a child by his family, friends, fellow officers and a greatful public. As we Believe that Christ will come again and we celebrate Easter for his sacrifice, we must believe we will be reunited once again with Peter, where we can personally thank him for his sacrifice. Watch over us Peter, and God bless your family.

A Hero died and left behind a family that loved him, little did they know he had a large extended family that will never ever forget him. When I hear our citizens making negative remarks about the actions of an officer who had only a milisecond to respond it sickends me. I am sure Officer Grignon approached his killer with uitimate respect and was killed in doing so. What a Brave Man he was and remains in our hearts. The day was a perfect representation of how we as officers felt. It was gray, rainey and depressing. This is how the procession went, yet many civilians stopped on the side of the highway and stood in the rain to honor a fallen HERO. The rain and gloom continued during the entire funeral, but something wonderful happenened after the service was over, the SUN begain to shine, a new day had dawned in our lives, it was like Peter had been delivered to heaven and lifted the gray cloud of grief from our department. As day turned to night and the stars shined from the heavens, It was like he was saying Rejoice my brothers I am home with the Father, stay strong , be united and fight the good fight for one day we will be reunited. Untill then Peter will be smiling down upon us.

I think we have left out 1 Very important group to thank in all of this terrible tragedy that occured and im sure it wasnt on purpose , just the sorrow and grief we have for our fallen HERO, Officer Peter Grignon and his Wife and families , The Communications Division of LMPD did EVERYTHING they could to get Officer Grignon Help and they did an OUTSTANDING job , I for one am Thankful for all of our Communication Personel . The Communications men and women are a select group of great people we count on EVERYDAY to get us the backup we need and help when we need it . So i just wanted to THANK them VERY Much for all they did for Officer Grignon on that tragic day and Thank them for doing an Excellent job daily as we could not do our jobs without them ! so when you get a chance please tell them Thanks as they deserve it Greatly ! I SPENT 18 MONTHS WITH THE JEFFERSON COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE AND THEN OVER 22 YEARS WITH THE JEFFERSON COUNTY POLICE.

I NEVER HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO PERSONALLY MEET OFFICER PETER GRIGNON BUT I GOT TO KNOW HIM VERY QUICKLY. I LEARNED ABOUT HIM FROM HIS WIFE, I LEARNED ABOUT HIM FROM HIS MOM AND DAD AND HIS BROTHER, I LEARNED ABOUT HIM FROM HIS FELLOW OFFICERS, I LEARNED ABOUT HIM FROM HIS PASTORS, I LEARNED ABOUT HIM FROM HIS FRIENDS AND FORMER CO-WORKERS. ACCORDING TO ALL OF THEM HE EPITOMIZED WHAT WE ALL STRIVE TO BE.

I WAS HEARTSICK WHEN I HEARD THE NEWS THAT OFFICER PETER GRIGNON HAD BEEN MURDERED. MY WORST FEARS HAD COME TRUE. I HAD BEEN TELLING EVERYBODY WHO ASKED ME ABOUT THE METRO PD THAT I HAD GREAT ANXIETY AND MISGIVINGS ABOUT THE NEW ADMINISTRATION'S ATTITUDE TOWARD THE USE OF FORCE, THAT IT WAS GOING TO GET AN OFFICER KILLED AND THAT IT WAS ONLY A MATTER OF TIME. NOW, IT HAD HAPPENED. LAW ENFORCEMENT'S WORST NIGHTMARE HAD COME TRUE.

SEVERAL DECISIONS BY THE MAYOR, THE CHIEF OF POLICE AND THE COMMONWEALTH'S ATTORNEY HAVE CAUSED AN ATTITUDINAL CHANGE IN THE USE OF DEADLY FORCE. POLITICAL EXPEDIENCY AND POLITICAL POSTURING HAVE TRUMPED OFFICER SAFETY. IT USED TO BE THAT OFFICERS WERE TRAINED IN THE "SHOOT-DON'T SHOOT" MODE. NOW THE ATTITUDE IS "DON'T SHOOT-SHOOT". A FRACTION OF TIME HAS BEEN ADDED TO CRITICAL SITUATIONS CREATING THE POSSIBILITY THAT OFFICERS WILL HESITATE OR SECOND GUESS THEMSELVES IN CONSIDERING USE OF DEADLY FORCE. IT IS THAT SPLIT SECOND, THAT HESITATION, THAT INCREASES THE POLICE OFFICERS CHANCES OF BEING INJURED OR KILLED. THERE MAY BE NO WRITTEN POLICY CHANGE, BUT IT IS REAL AND IT IS IMPLIED AND EVERY OFFICER IS AWARE OF IT. ASK ANY OFFICER YOU KNOW AND HE OR SHE WILL TELL YOU THIS IS HOW THEY FEEL.

THEN THERE WAS THE MCKENZIE MATTINGLY FIASCO. WHY WAS HE INDICTED? ANYBODY WHO KNEW ANY OF THE DETAILS OF THE CASE COULD COME TO BUT ONE CONCLUSION. THERE WAS NO BASIS TO INDICT HIM. YET MCKENZIE MATTINGLY WAS TRIED AND CONVICTED BY THE MAYOR, THE CHIEF OF POLICE AND THE COMMONWEALTH'S ATTORNEY. HE AND HIS FAMILY WERE PUT THROUGH HELL FOR OVER TWO YEARS. EVERYONE IN THE LAW ENFORCEMENT COMMUNITY SAW WHAT POLITICAL EXPEDIENCY COULD DO TO AN OFFICER OVER THAT TWO YEAR PERIOD. EVERYONE IN LAW ENFORCEMENT KNEW THAT IT COULD HAVE JUST AS WELL BEEN THEM. WHAT HAD HAPENED TO MCKENZIE MATTINGLY WAS NOW IN THE BACK OF THE MIND OF EVERY LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER IN JEFFERSON COUNTY.

LET'S NOT FORGET THE JUDGES WHO HAD PETE GRIGNON'S ASSASSIN IN FRONT OF THEM ON HIS CURRENT CHARGES. DID THEY ACT RESPONSIBLY? THEY HAVE THE POWER TO TAKE PEOPLE INTO CUSTODY WHO ARE A DANGER TO THEMSLEVES OR TO THE COMMUNITY. DID THEY DO WHAT THEY WERE ELECTED TO DO OR DID THEY TRY AND PASS ON THEIR RESPONSIBILITY TO SOME ONE ELSE? YOU DECIDE FROM THE FACTS AS WE KNOW THEM.

WHY AM I SO CONCERNED ABOUT ALL OF THIS? MY GOAL IS TO CALL ATTENTION TO THE CURRENT MINDSET IN METRO GOVERNMENT, THE POLICE DEPARTMENT AND THE COMMONWEALTH ATTORNEY'S OFFICE THAT THE "WARM AND FUZZY" POLICY TOWARDS CRIMINALS DOES NOT WORK. IT NEVER HAS, IT NEVER DOES AND IT NEVER WILL. THE CRIMINAL ELEMENT SEES THIS AS WEAKNESS ON THE PART OF LAW ENFORCEMENT. IT IS NOT JUST POLICE OFFICERS WHO ARE NEGATIVELY IMPACTED BY THIS PHILOSOPHY. WHAT ABOUT THE GOOD, LAW ABIDING CITIZENS OF THE METRO WHO ARE AFRAID TO COME OUT OF THEIR RESIDENCES FOR FEAR OF BEING ASSAULTED, ROBBED OR WORSE BY THE CRIMINALS IN THEIR NEIGHBORHOODS? WE ARE SUPPOSED TO BE AN ALL-AMERICAN CITY, 16TH LARGEST IN THE NATION. WE HAVE "FOURTH STREET LIVE", THE WATERFRONT DEVELOPMENT AND THE NEWLY PROSPED EXPANSION OF THE PARKS SYSTEM. BUT WHY DO WE HAVE TO WAIT FOR 130 POLICE VACANCIES TO OCCUR BEFORE WE HIRE REPLACEMENTS? WHY ARE WE 50 PLUS PARAMEDICS SHORT IN EMS? I THOUGHT PUBLIC SAFETY WAS ALWAYS A NUMBER ONE PRIORITY.

WE HAVE PEOPLE HELD PRISONER IN THEIR OWN HOMES BY FEAR OF VICIOUS CRIMINALS THAT PREY ON THEM. AND THEN WE HAVE A MAYOR, CHIEF OF POLICE AND COMMONWELATH'S ATTORNEY WHO WANT THE METRO POLICE TO DEAL WITH THESE CRIMINALS WHILE FACING SUSPENSION, TERMINATION AND INDICTMENT FOR ANY PERCIEVED ERROR IN JUDGEMENT, ALL THE WHILE OPERATING UNDER A PROVEN FLAWED "POLICY", A "POLICY" SET IN MOTION FOR POLITICAL GAIN. IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE THIS JUST ASK ANY OFFICER YOU KNOW AND IF THEY ARE UNAFRAID OF RETRIBUTION, THEY WILL TELL YOU THIS IS HOW THEY FEEL.

AGAIN, MY AIM IN WRITING THIS IS TO PREVENT ANY FURTHER INJURY OR LOSS OF LIFE OF ANOTHER METRO OFFICER. I WORRY MOST ABOUT THE YOUNGER OFFICERS WHO DON'T YET HAVE THE SRTEET EXPERIENCE, WHO ARE NOT AS SEASONED AS THE OLDER OFFICERS. I DON'T WANT TO SEE ANOTHER WIFE OR HUSBAND, CHILD, MOM OR DAD, BROTHER OR SISTER HAVE TO EXPERIENCE THE DEVASTATION OF LOSING A LOVED ONE, A METRO POLICE OFFICER WHO JUST HAPPENS TO BE DOING HIS OR HER DUTY.

I AM SURE I WILL BE CRITIZED AND CHALLANGED FOR EXPRESSING MY FEELINGS AND CONCERNS. I AM PREPARED FOR THAT. WHILE ON THE JEFFERSON COUNTY POLICE DEPARTMENT I WAS A COMMANDING OFFICER FOR 14 OF THOSE YEARS. SEVEN OF THOSE 14 YEARS I WAS A STAFF OFFICER. I DO NOT BELIEVE IN MISUSE OF FORCE AS EVIDENCED BY LACK OF COMPLAINTS IN MY PERSONNEL FILE. BETTER, ASK ANYONE I EVER SURPERVISED OR WORKED WITH, AND THEY WILL TELL YOU I DID NOT TOLERATE MISUSE OF AUTHORITY OR BRUTALITY OF ANY KIND. I LEAD BY EXAMPLE AND HAVE ALWAYS THOUGHT OF MYSELF AS A COP'S COP. I BELIEVED IN POSITIVE DISCIPLINE ALWAYS AND NEGATIVE DISCIPLINE AS A LAST RESORT.

ON MAY 9TH MY WIFE AND I WILL CELEBRATE MY 30TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY. ONE WEEK LATER, MAY 15TH, WE WILL CELEBRATE THE 30TH ANNIVERSARY OF MY ATTEMPTED MURDER BY AN ARMED ROBBER. MY WIFE AND I WILL CELEBRATE MY SURVIVAL OF A FACE TO FACE FIRE-FIGHT WITH A FELON WHO HAD JUST HELD UP THE RED LOBSTER IN DUPONT. IN ANSWERING THE HOLD-UP CALL, I WATCHED AS THE ROBBER DREW HIS AUTOMATIC AND ATTEMPTED TO PUT A BULLET IN MY HEAD JUST TO EFFECT HIS ESCAPE. I PARRIED THE BARREL OF HIS GUN WITH MY ARM AND SIMULTANEOUSLY FIRED CRITICALLY WOUNDING HIM AS HE WOUNDED ME. WITH THE HELP OF ARRIVING COUNTY AND ST. MATTHEWS OFFICERS THIS WOULD BE MURDERER WAS CAPTURED IN MINUTES AS HE ATTEMPTED TO FLEE THE SCENE.

IT DIDN'T TAKE LONG FOR ME TO PHYSICALLY HEAL FROM MY GUNSHOT WOUNDS, BUT EVERY TIME I HEAR OR READ OF AN OFFICER BEING INJURED OR KILLED IT REKINDLES THE TRAUMA THAT OCCURS WHEN SOMEONE TRIES TO KILL YOU, WHEN SOMEONE TRIES TO TAKE FROM YOU THE ONE THING YOU CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT, YOUR LIFE.

FOR THOSE PEOPLE WHO THINK A LIFE OR DEATH FIRE-FIGHT IS A FUN EXPERIENCE, OR SHOOTING SOMEONE IS FOLLY OR HAVING TO TAKE SOMEONE'S LIFE IS AN ADRENALINE RUSH, YOU HAVE WATCHED TOO MUCH TV. YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW LIFE AND DEATH STRUGGLES SCAR LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS FOR LIFE. OFFICERS COPE WITH THE TRAUMA IN VARYING DEGREES, WITH SOME EVEN LEAVING THE JOB AS TOO TRAUMATIC.

WHAT ARE OUR OPTIONS TO CORRECT THIS "DON'T SHOOT-SHOOT" ATTITUDE. IF THE POLITICIANS DON'T ACT THEMSELVES TO CORRECT THIS "POLICY" WHAT CAN WE DO. WE CAN DO NOTHING AND HOPE WE DON'T LOSE ANOTHER OFFICER, OR WE CAN TAKE OUR FUTURE IN OUR OWN HANDS AND EFFECT A POSITIVE POLITICAL CHANGE AT THE NEXT ELECTION. THERE ARE OVER 2000 CURRENT AND RETIRED METRO OFFICERS. EACH HAS A HUSBAND OR WIFE, GIRLFRIEND OR BOYFRIEND. EACH HAS AN EXTENDED FAMILY. EACH HAS FRIENDS AND ACQUAINTANCES. IF EACH METRO OFFICER AND RETIREE CONTACTS 10 PEOPLE WHO VOTE, AND WE ASK EACH OF THEM TO GET 10 VOTERS AND SO ON, WE CAN DEVELOP A HUGE VOTING BLOC THAT MUST BE RECOGNIZED. THERE ARE OTHER LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS IN THIS COUNTY AND MANY, MANY CITIZENS THAT HAVE BEEN DEEPLY TOUCHED BY PETER GRIGNON'S SENSELESS MURDER, THAT ARE BEHIND US AS WELL. WE HAVE OUR FUTURE IN OUR OWN HANDS. DO WE ACCEPT THIS CHALLANGE AND FORCE POLITICIANS TO DEAL WITH US FAIRLY AND WHO RECOGNIZE OFFICER SAFETY FOR THE PRIORITY THAT IT MUST BE?

WE ALL KNOW THAT SOMETHING GOOD COMES FROM EVERY EVENT, EVEN DEATH. MAYBE OFFICER PETE GRIGNON IS THE CHANGE AGENT, THE IMPETUS FOR US TO FORCE THE POLITICIANS TO RE-EXAMINE THEIR ATTITUDE ON THE USE OF FORCE, ON SUSPENSIONS, TERMINATIONS, INDICTMENTS AND COURT JUDGEMENTS. MAYBE, JUST MAYBE, PETE HAS HIS HAND ON EACH ONE OF OUR SHOULDERS SAYING "I'M WITH YOU IN THIS FIGHT". GOD BLESS YOU PETE AND THANK YOU.

officer Grignon , was very brave man. doing his job he gave the most that any body ever could give. he gave his life on march 23rd. for us to be safe. and all my prayers goes out to his faimly. the reason i say he is a brave man is because while i was sleeping he was working to keep e safe from any thing that could happen. and he must have always did his job rite and he made the bigest sacrifice that any body could do. i may have not known him but i am on a fire department and i know what it is like so brother may you rest in peace

I t is hard to go back to work and think anything will ever be the same. I pull people over and find myself on edge wondering if they are going to do something stupid? I find myself extra cautious, which may be a good thing, but because of some little gang banging piece of trash our world has changed irrevocably.

I want to know the whole story of what transpired that night. There are rumors going around that it is worse than anyone can believe. I have been grieving and now I am angry. I lost a Brother Officer. The Grignon Family lost a husband, son and brother. Where were the parents when this little piece of trash was out at 630 in the morning in a stolen car with a gun? Had they called the Police to report him missing or did they just not give a damn?

I am sick about the whole thing. I can't imagine what Rebecca is going through. I know my wife watched the video and cried and I know that she worries about me every time I step out the door. It is time for everyone to step up and quit making excuses for these criminals and start dealing out justice. I am ashamed and angered by the prosecutors in Kentucky and Indiana over their less thatn stellar performance on putting this little pice of crap behind bars. They had the opportunity and blew it. Now Peter is dead. Way to go guys! Was it too much trouble for you to do your jobs?

Officer Peter Grignon died because the system failed him. Travis Ballard's parents proclaim the system failed him, but that is BS. They sure didn't try and stop him from doing all his crimes now did they? It is time for people to raise their own children and not rely on the government to fdo it for them.

I am from California and I heard about this story from a police officer who plays halo on the Xbox.......when he told me this story it brought tears to his eyes and mine . I the Police Officers of Kentucky and any other State do a job to there citys and most often are unnoticed for there hard work . Police Officers put there lives on the line everyday day the go to work. But I am proud of every hard working Police Officer , that is on the job every day to help save our lives. I am only able to dimly view my computer screen as I write, because my vision is blurred by the tears streaming down my cheeks. I have wept for twenty minutes, and I will most likely weep for twenty more before I am through. Although fate never afforded me the pleasure of meeting Officer Grignon, I feel a sorrow and an emptiness that will never be comprehended by anyone but a fellow officer. I may not have worked for Louisville Metro, but I too lost a brother officer. The freedoms each of us enjoy carry a hefty price tag, and Officer Grignon was called upon to pay the ultimate price for these freedoms. So as you walk down the street without fear of harm, thank that police officer you pass by. God forbid, but tomorrow may be your last opportunity to do so, for he may also may be called upon to pay the supreme price. Unfortunately I was never able to say thank you to Officer Grignon while he lived. But his spirit will live on, and as he watches my back each night I pray that he will understand how deeply indebted we all are to him for his sacrifice. Thank you for all you did Officer Grignon. Heaven's Police Department is now a little better.

I know that losing a member of a family in this manner is truly devastating. I want the family to know that there is still some warmth and love in this cold cruel world.

I am deeply sorry for the loss of a good man; and deeply sorry that Officer Grignon's profession is even necessary. It is deeply disturbing that a young officer, and a young boy of seventeen, have both died. What reasons can we, as a society, point to as the cause of these deaths? TV violence? Gun control? Poor Parenting? Bad luck? Lack of public funds for more police protection? What issues lie at the heart of these killings?

The world is in desperate need of good men (women, and children,too). My deepest condolences to Officer Grignon's family, friends, co-workers, and community. I know you will all feel the absence of him. The world, too, will feel the absence of a good and decent man. My condolences also to Travis Ballard's relations. Though it is difficult to sympathize with the offender, Travis Ballard was obviously in great emotional pain. The world will never realize the potential of Officer Grignon's or Travis Ballard's lives. May we the loss of their lives not be in vain. For their sake, and for the sake of this world, may we each strive to be better citizens in our lives. May Office Grignon and Travis Ballard both rest in peace. I personally did not know Peter. When I learned a fellow LMPD Officer was killed defending our city it sickened me deep inside and I felt the loss of one of our brothers. We are a proud family.
